05/20/10 | Men's Golf
SANTEE, Calif. – The No. 1 University of Oregon men's golf team began play as the top seed at the NCAA Southwest Regional on Thursday, posting a 6-over 294 to claim a share of the lead after the opening round at Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
Daniel Miernicki led a balanced team attack for the Ducks, shooting even par 72 at his hometown course. The sophomore is tied for seventh among the 75-man field while all four of his teammates also posted top 25 efforts through the first 18 holes at the 7,360-yard course.
California, Tennessee and UNLV are even with Oregon at 6-over, while UCF is a shot back in fifth and New Mexico State sits two strokes back at 8-over.
Jack Dukeminier is tied for 12th following a 1-over 73. The junior from Eugene earned Academic All-District honors earlier in the day.
Pac-10 co-Golfer of the Year Eugene Wong rushed out to an early lead at 3-under through the first six holes, but ended the day tied for 18th at 2-over. Isaiah Telles and Andrew Vijarro are tied for 25th after each shooting 3-over.
None of the other five regional tournaments have more than two teams tied for the top spot, let alone six teams within two strokes of one another.
Rounds 2 and 3 will take place on Friday and Saturday, respectively, with the top five teams advancing to the 2010 NCAA Championships, June 1-6, at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
