Gergel Vaults to Victory at Stanford
03/28/10 | Track and Field
STANFORD, Calif. ? Wins by Melissa Gergel in the pole vault and the women's 4x400 meter relay team were two of Oregon's highlights Saturday at the Stanford Invitational Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Gergel, a junior from Glenwood, Ill., won the women's pole vault in a jump off with Stanford's Katerina Stefandi. After both cleared 14-1.25, both missed at 14-5.25. Each vaulter tried again at 14-5.25 and missed, thus the bar was lowered to 14-1.75. The two competitors then cleared that bar before Gergel won with a clearance at 14-3.25. That height marked an outdoor personal best for Gergel and ranks second all-time at Oregon. It also is tied for the national lead in 2010 with San Diego State's Stephanie James.
The team of Mandy White, Amber Purvis, Keshia Baker and Michele Williams won the women's 4x100 meter relay in 44.38. That was just .08 off Ducks' season best of 44.30 set last week at the Oregon Preview by White, Purvis, Baker and Jamesha Youngblood. Saturday's time was the third-fastest 4x100 relay in school history.
Jordan Stray threw a two-foot seasonal best in the invitational section of the men's hammer. The junior from Centralia, Wash., finished second with a throw of 211-6 and was the top collegian in the field.
Scott Penny won the collegiate section of the men's hammer. The junior from Lawrence, Kan., threw 185-3 on his first attempt.
In the women's 800, senior Zoe Buckman ran eighth in the top section in 2:08.19, while freshmen Chloe Steinbeck and Becca Friday clocked outdoor personal bests in the next section. Steinbeck, from Beaverton, Ore., was fourth in her heat in 2:08.33, while Becca Friday was eighth in 2:10.27.
Senior Colin Witter-Tilton matched his season PR with a clearance at 16-6.75, which was good for fourth on Saturday.
Also in the women's pole vault, Jordan Roskelley tied for sixth at 12-9.5, a seasonal best for the junior from Spokane, Wash.
In the men's 200 meters, sophomore Matt Butcher set a seasonal best in finishing second in his heat in 21.73. Senior Chad Barlow was just .09 off his personal best in winning his heat in 21.89.
Freshman Alexandria Davidson won her section of the women's 200 meters in 24.54.
