SAN DIEGO - The University of Oregon softball team (14-5) posted its second shutout of the San Diego Classic with a 2-0 win Saturday over returning NCAA qualifier Cal Poly (5-6).
Freshman pitcher Jessica Moore (6-2) pitched her fifth complete game of the season and matched her career high in strikeouts (12) - a mark that matched UO's third-best K total in a game.
UO scored in the fourth inning after freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard and junior center fielder Neena Bryant led off with singles. A sacrifice bunt advanced them to second and third base, and Howard scored on a sacrifice fly by junior pinch-hitter Kaitlin Vitek.
The Ducks scored again in the fifth inning when freshman left fielder Allie Burger hit an infield single, then advanced to third base when the pitcher's throw to first base skipped into right field foul territory. After two infield outs, she scored on an RBI single up the middle by freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas.
Oregon was primed for even more runs when the next two batters, junior first baseman Monique Fuiava and Howard, singled to load the bases with two outs. The Mustangs changed pitchers and brought in Anna Cahn, and she struck out UO's Bryant to end the inning.
Cahn pitched the rest of the way and struck out two and walked none in her 1.1 innings. Starter Helen Pena (1-2) took the loss, struck out two, walked none, gave up 10 hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Altogether, six Ducks hit safely, including four that had two hits each - sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3), Pappas (2-for-3, 1 RBI), Howard (2-for-3, 1 run) and Bryant (2-for-3). Fuiava and Burger added single hits.
At the plate for Cal Poly - three hitters hit safely - Cahn (1-for-2), Stephanie Correia (1-for-3) and Dana Perez (1-for-3).
The Ducks were scheduled to play San Diego (3-8) in its San
Diego Classic immediately Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex, but after
UO took a 1-0 lead in the first, it started raining at 4:50 p.m. and
USD officials canceled the game.
UO resumes action in the
tourney with a final game vs. No. 21 Fresno State (10-7) Sunday
morning, which was pushed back to start at 9:30 a.m. (depending on the
weather).
