SAN DIEGO - In opening day action in the San Diego Classic, returning NCAA tournament qualifier San Diego State (10-8) topped the Oregon softball team (13-5) Friday night by a 5-2 count and ended the Ducks' seven-game win streak.
Oregon staked a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but San Diego State answered with a run in the third and three more in the third to go up, 4-2, then tacked on a final run in the sixth inning.
Duck freshman pitcher Jessica Moore pitched her fourth complete game of the season, struck out eight, walked none and allowed 10 hits, and four of her five runs allowed were earned.
Junior first baseman Monique Fuiava accounted for UO's first run with a lead-off homer in the second inning on a 1-0 pitch. The next batter, sophomore infielder Kelsey Chambers singled to second base, advanced to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt and groundout, then scored on a high wild pitch that tipped off the catcher's glove.
San Diego State came back to score three runs in the third inning thanks to five straight hits, and appeared ready for more.
After a pair of lead-off singles, a triple knocked in their first two runs, then two more singles and a wild pitch put runners on second and third base, still with no outs. Moore got the next batter for the first out via a strikeout, then cut down another run on a close play at home on an infield chopper, then ended the inning with a strikeout.
The next inning, UO responded with a pair of lead-off singles by freshman left fielder Allie Burger and senior designated player Blair Williamson. The runners advanced to second and third base after a strikeout and ground-out, but another ground-out ended the inning.
For Williamson, it was her sixth multi-hit game of the season – twice as many as her previous career high for a season.
SDSU had 10 hits from five players, including three with multiple hits – Reifschneider (3-for-4, 2 runs), Brittany Knudsen (3-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Justeen Maeva (2-for-3, 1 RBI). Starting pitcher Bailey Micetich (2-3) struck out four, walked one, yielded five hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned in the complete game.
Earlier in the afternoon, UO topped Long Beach State, 1-0, behind an eight-strikeout pitching performance by sophomore Samantha Skillingstad. Junior catcher Ashley Kivett doubled in that contest's fifth inning, and scored on a single by Burger.
Looking ahead, UO returns to action Saturday and faces Cal Poly and San Diego at 2 and 4:30 p.m., respectively, at the University of San Diego softball field, then has one more contest Sunday morning at 9 a.m. vs. No. 21 Fresno State at San Diego State.
