No. 4 Ducks Aiming for Another Team Title at Western Intercollegiate
04/18/10 | Men's Golf
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The fourth-ranked University of Oregon men's golf team is in the hunt for its second team title in less than a week, taking the two round lead at the 64th annual Western Intercollegiate at 8-under 692.
Led by Eugene Wong, who leads all individuals at 5-under through 36 holes, the Ducks hold a two-stroke advantage over fellow Pac-10 squad UCLA going into Sunday's final round at the 6,615-yard, par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The tournament appears to be strictly a two-team race with 18 holes to play as UO and No. 5 UCLA are the only two sides under par among the 12-team field. Third-place Tulsa is 24 shots off the pace at 16-over 717.
Joining Wong (135) near the top of the leaderboard is Andrew Vijarro, who is tied for ninth at 1-under 139.
The Ducks got a huge boost from their No. 6 golfer Jack Paton, who stands at even par and is tied for 13th. Daniel Miernicki and Jack Dukeminier are also among the top 20, tied for 16th at 1-over 141, and Isaiah Telles is only one stroke behind them tied for 19th.
Wong was the first round leader after a 5-under 65 and holds a two-stroke lead over Mike Barry (-3) of Oregon State.
Oregon has already won a record three tournament titles this season.
