EUGENE - With a trio of players in the top 15 overall, the No. 34 University of Oregon women's golf team ranked fifth in first-round action in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, hosted Monday at the Eugene Country Club.
UO combined on a four-over score of 292 – its lowest of the spring by three strokes - and was only nine strokes shy of the lead.
“I thought we had a great start,” Oregon head coach Ria Quiazon said.
“The Eugene CC superintendent and staff have put a tremendous amount of
energy into getting this course ready, especially for this time of year –
the fairways are rolling, and the greens are smooth and fast."
Overall in the team standings, No. 2 Arizona State led the field with its five-under 283, and was followed by No. 5 USC (second, 284), No. 24 California (third, 287) and No. 1 UCLA (fourth, 289).
One stroke behind the Ducks, No. 7 Arizona stood sixth (293), ahead of No. 38 Washington (seventh, 296), No. 14 Stanford (eighth, 301) and Oregon State and Washington State (ninth-tie, 317).
Individually for UO, junior Erica Omlid was tied for seventh place after she shot a career-best 71 – three strokes better than her previous collegiate low from 2008-09 and four better than her previous season low. The Springfield, Ore., native led UO for the first time this spring, second time in 2009-10 and fourth time in her 63 career rounds.
Omlid started the day on the 10th tee and birdied three of her first five holes (the par-3 12th and par-4 14th and 15th holes), then added her final birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Overall, she carded par scores on 11 holes (#1-3, 5, 8-11, 16-17) and bogeyed the other three (#4, 7, 18).
“It was fun to be able to play in front of so many friends and family,” Omlid said. “Getting the birdie on the 12th was a good way to get started, and sinking a 20-foot putt is always a good thing. The course looks fantastic, and we know there are a lot of birdies out there so we're really enjoying playing at home and flashing the 'O' sign whenever we can. We've worked really hard to get here ,and now we're ready to do our best.”
Two-time All-Pac-10 Second Team pick and junior Kendra Little followed one stroke back in a six-way tie for ninth place overall with an even-par 72, thanks to her one birdie (par-4 #10) and 16 par scores. Monday's score was her second of the spring at par or better and ninth in 30 rounds overall in 2009-10.
Sophomore Ashley Edwards followed in 15th place with a one-over 73 and matched her spring low. The Oakley, Calif,. native carded three birdies on the par-4 first, third and 17th holes and had par scores on 11 other holes.
Freshman Cheyenne Hickle rounded out UO's scoring in 31st place (76) with her two birdies and 12 par scores, and senior Kate Hildahl also began play in her third Pac-10 Championships (43rd-t, 81).
“I'm not surprised with how Erica's playing," Quiazon said. "She's a steady player that has worked hard to be ready for this event. Kendra is hitting it well, and you can tell she's feeling it again. Ashley has spent the last week really trying to be ready, Cheyenne shook off some shaky holes in the middle to finish strong, and I know Kate will come back tomorrow motivated to play well.”
On the individual leaderboard, California's Joanne Lee led the field with a five-under 67, and was followed by Arizona State's Juliana Murcia (second, 68) and USC's Lizette Salas (third, 69).
