TEMPE, Ariz. – With its 7-4 win Saturday night at the ASU Softball Complex, the No. 16 University of Oregon softball team (31-9, 7-4) evened the season series with No. 9 Arizona State (36-10, 5-6) and remained in second place in the Pac-10 Conference.
Savoring its first win over ASU since 2007, Oregon cooled off the Devils early with four, two-out runs in the first inning, then added another run in the third, and two more in the fifth.
ASU responded with single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings in its fourth loss the last five games.
In the first inning, Duck freshman left fielder Allie Burger and Neena Bryant set the table for the offense with a walk and double to right center field. After a pair of infield ground-outs, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers singled to left field to score both runs for her team-high eighth game-winning RBI of the season.
Later in the first, junior catcher Kaitlin Vitek walked, and junior Ashley Kivett followed with a 2-RBI double to right center field
In the third inning, Chambers extended UO's lead to 5-1 when she drilled her eighth homer of the season – second-most on the team - over the left field wall.
The Concord, Calif., native Chambers got things started again in the fifth inning with a four-pitch walk, and another pair of five-pitch walks to Vitek and Ashley Kivett loaded the bases. Freshman Kaylan Howard followed with a 2-RBI double – her fifth two-bagger of the season.
For the game, Chambers and Bryant both went 2-for-3, and the former tied her season high in RBI (3). Five other Ducks garnered hits – freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas (1-for-3), junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (1-for-4), Ashley Kivett (1-for-2), Howard (1-for-3) and junior Lindsey Chambers (1-for-4).
En route to her 10th win in her last 11 decisions, sophomore starter Samantha Skillingstad (11-4) struck out four, walked two, gave up five hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
After one run scored and runners reached first and third base in the fifth inning, freshman Jessica Moore came in and got the final out on a swinging strikeout. Altogether in her 2.1 innings, she struck out three, walked two, allowed two hits and one unearned run.
ASU starting pitcher Sam Parlich (7-5) struck out six, walked four, yielded five hits, and all five of her runs allowed were earned in her 5.1 innings. Megan Elliott worked the final 1.2 innings, struck out one, walked one, gave up one hit, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Five ASU batters hit safely, led by Kaylyn Castillo (2-for-4, 1 RBI).
Coming into Saturday's game, UO's seven-game losing streak to the Sun Devils included Friday's series opener (10-3), and three games in both 2009 (8-0, 5-1, 5-1) and 2008 (3-2, 6-1, 9-0).
Looking ahead, the two teams meet again in the rubber contest Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available at the www.TheSunDevils.com softball schedule page.
