TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 Arizona State softball team (37-10, 6-6) staked a 3-0 win over No. 16 Oregon (31-10, 7-5) at the ASU Softball Complex Sunday to take the season series in 2-1 fashion.
ASU starter Hilary Bach (19-4) held Oregon scoreless for only the third time this season, and scattered six hits - a pair of which came from sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3) and freshman left fielder Allie Burger (2-for-4).
Freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard (1-for-2) also hit safely for Oregon for the eighth time in a league contest, and senior Carlyn Re lined her seventh pinch-hit in 13 at-bats this season.
UO's best chance to score came in the third inning when Howard singled, sophomore third baseman Lindsey Chambers reached on a fielder's choice, and Burger bunted safely to load the bases with one out, but Neena Bryant lined into a double play to end the inning.
In the fourth, junior first baseman Monique Fuiava and Kelsey Chambers reached second and first base with one out after a hit by pitch and single, but a strikeout and ground-out ended the inning.
The Ducks tried to rally again in the seventh with two outs. Re and Burger stroked singles up the middle to put runners on first and second base, but an infield pop-up ended the game.
On the mound for Oregon, freshman starter Jessica Moore (13-6) pitched five innings, struck out three, walked four, gave up five hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
After Moore surrendered Krista Donnenwirth's fifth homer of the season to lead off the sixth, sophomore Mikayla Endicott retired the final three outs and allowed no runs for the eighth time among her 12 relief appearances in 2010.
Earlier in the game, ASU broke a scoreless tie after three innings with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
In the fourth, Mandy Urfer singled with one out and came around to score on a triple by Kaylyn Carlson down the right field line. In the fifth, an infield ground-out scored Taylor Haro who had reached on an error by the first baseman and advanced to third base on a single by Katelyn Boyd.
En route to her second complete game on the weekend (and 18th overall), Bach finished with six strikeouts and one walk in her seventh shutout of 2010.
Four ASU batters hit safely, and Urfer was the lone Sun Devil with multiple hits (2-for-2), while Boyd (1-for-2) walked twice and stole two bases.
Earlier in the weekend, UO topped Arizona State 7-4 Saturday to end a seven-game losing streak in the series dating back to 2006, while ASU won the opener Friday, 10-3.
For the series, Kelsey Chambers led Oregon in hitting with an impressive .750 batting average (6-for-8, 2 runs, homer, 3 RBI) and Kaylan Howard also topped .300 (.333, 3-for-9, 1 run, 1 double, 2 RBI). Among other weekend stat notes, Neena Bryant (.273, 3-for-11) hit her 33rd career homer Friday and moved into a tie for third all-time for UO, and Moore moved to fourth all-time for the Ducks in strikeouts in a season (16) with her eight K's in 9.1 innings vs. ASU.
ASU claimed its second-three game series of the year after it swept then-No. 6 UCLA two weeks ago, was swept by then-No. 16 Cal last week, and went 1-2 against then-No. 2 Arizona in early April.
UO has also won two Pac-10 series with a first-ever sweep of then-No. 13 Cal, and a 2-1 advantage over Oregon State, while returning national champion and No. 1 Washington won a tightly-contested series over UO, 2-1, last weekend in Eugene.
Looking ahead, Oregon returns home for its final non-conference tilts in a doubleheader vs. Portland State, Wednesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
Two of UO's final three Pac-10 series are on the road vs, UCLA (Friday-Sunday, April 30-May 2) and Stanford (Thursday-Saturday, May 13-15), and its last home action is sandwiched in between vs. eight-time national champion Arizona, Friday-Sunday, May 7-9.
