No. 2 Ducks Finish Sixth at Pac-10 Championships
04/28/10 | Men's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. – The second-ranked University of Oregon never fully recovered from its uncharacteristic showing over the first 36 holes of the Pac-10 men's golf championships and remained in sixth place at its conclusion with a score of 11-under 1,409.
Sixth-ranked Washington won its second straight Pac-10 title, outdueling No. 1 Stanford over the final 18 holes at the 7,057-yard, par 71 Karsten Golf Club. The Huskies collectively shot 37-under 1,383 to win by three strokes.
The Ducks were 5-over on the day (360), their only round over par, and tied with Cal for sixth place. No. 10 USC was third at 24-under 1,396, No. 13 Arizona State finished fourth at 19-under 1,401 and 23rd-ranked Oregon State was fifth at 13-under 1,407.
On a brighter note for Oregon, Daniel Miernicki finished tied for sixth overall at 10-under 274 (68-71-64-71), his second top 10 finish at the conference tournament. A sophomore from Santee, Calif., Miernicki has five top 10 finishes over his last nine events.
Cal's Eric Mina won medalist honors with a 16-under 268.
Oregon's No. 1 golfer Eugene Wong, who struggled mightily through the first three rounds, rallied with a 67 on Wednesday to jump up to a tie for 20th at 2-under 282 (74-69-72-67). Wong's finale could have been even more impressive considering he had five bogeys. The North Vancouver, B.C., native had not finished worse than 17th in 2010.
Jack Dukeminier ended the championships tied for 28th at even-par 284 (66-71-73-74). Isaiah Telles was a stroke behind him at 1-over 285 (74-70-67-74), tying for 31st, and Jack Paton (T-46th) and Andrew Vijarro (T-51st) finished well off the pace at 8-over 292 (71-77-70-74) and 10-over 294 (72-71-76-75), respectively.
The Ducks will now await their postseason destination when the NCAA Regional bids are announced on Monday. NCAA Regional tournaments will take place in six locations starting May 20. The NCAA men's golf finals are June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
