Ducks in Fifth-Place Tie at ASU Thunderbird Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 4 University of Oregon men's golf team stands in a tie for fifth place after the first day at the ASU Thunderbird Classic with a score of 1-over 569.
The Ducks are deadlocked with UC Irvine, two strokes behind the host Sun Devils for the fourth spot and 16 shots off the pace of leader Arizona.
Eugene Wong, UO's No. 1, is tied for fifth among individuals, breaking par in both of his rounds Friday to hit the clubhouse at 5-under 137. Wong was named the Pac-10 Golfer of the Month for March earlier in the day.
Jack Dukeminier's second-round 68 was key for Oregon, which led to the Ducks' 2-under 282 in the afternoon round. Dukeminier and Daniel Miernicki sit in a tie for 34th at 2-over 144 heading into the final round at Karsten Golf Course.
Jack Paton shot 5-over 147 (t-56th) and Andrew Vijarro was 8-over (t-74th).
The 16-team field playing the 7,057-yard, par 71 course includes all ten Pac-10 conference schools.
Oregon was tied for sixth after the first round at 3-over 287. Wong was the only Duck under par after 18 holes, firing a 2-under 69.
The final round of the 54-hole event begins Saturday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
