CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 21 University of Oregon softball team (25-6, 1-1) had its 12-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as the Oregon State University Beavers (20-15, 1-1) held on for a 7-6 win at the OSU Softball Complex.
UO made matters interesting by scoring three runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but a strikeout and ground-out ended the game and tied the season series, 1-1.
The Beavers capitalized on a six-run second inning and knocked Duck starter, sophomore Samantha Skillingstad (7-4), from the game after a grand slam by clean-up hitter Aubrey Roderfeld on a two-out, 3-2 pitch.
The game had started Friday afternoon, and UO staked a 2-0 lead in the first inning, before another of the day's many rain showers forced a delay until Saturday. Freshman Samantha Pappas knocked in both runs on a single up the middle after freshman left fielder Allie Burger and sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers had each bunted for a single and double, respectively.
In the fourth inning with a runner on, UO was on the verge of cutting into the four-run lead when junior catcher Kaitlin Vitek hit a drive to deep left field center field, but centerfielder Ashley Sanchez made a leaping catchof the potential home run over the fence.
Four batters later with the bases loaded, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers hit another towering drive over the left field fence, but the ball drifted 15 feet foul. Ultimately, the Concord, Calif., native walked on the next pitch to score UO's third run.
After OSU scored its final run in the fifth inning, the Ducks sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh and even had the winning run at second base.
Kelsey Chambers led off with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, and two of the next three batters walked. Senior designated player Carlyn Re followed with an RBI double to center field to score another run and put runners on second and third base. Vitek added a four-pitch walk to load the bases, and senior Neena Bryant slapped a 2-2 pitch through the left side to score another run. However, UO's last two batters, freshman pinch hitter Jessica Moore and left fielder Allie Burger struck out and grounded out to second base to end the inning.
Overall, UO posted its fourth straight double-digit hit tally (11) after pounding out a school record 19 the game before. Junior first baseman Monique Fuiava had a season-high three hits (3-for-4), and the first three hitters in the line-up all had two hits – Burger (2-for-5, 1 run), Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Pappas (2-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI).
Re (1-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 walk) and Bryant (1-for-2, 2 walks) also both reached base multiple times.
On the mound for UO, Skillingstad struck out two, walked two, and all six of her runs earned were earned in her 1.2 innings. Sophomore Mikayla Endicott worked the middle three innings, struck out four, walked one, gave up two hits, and her only run allowed was earned. Junior Brittany Rumfelt pitched the last 1.1 innings, struck out one, walked none and yielded one hit and no runs.
Beaver freshman Paige Hall (14-13) got the win for her 5.2 innings in relief, struck out five, walked seven and gave up five hits, and all three runs allowed were earned. Starter Kelly Dyer re-entered the game in the seventh inning and earned the save after retiring the final two outs. In her 1.1 combined innings, she struck out one, walked two, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
Seven OSU batters hit safely, and two had multiple hits – Sanchez (2-for-3) and Maggie Doremus (2-for-3).
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series later Saturday afternoon, although a rain delay at 1:20 pm will likely push the start to approximately 2:45 p.m.
