Oregon Relays Quotes
May, 1, 2010
Luke Puskedra, M 10,000M (1st)
On plan for race:
“We are in the middle of some heavy training. We were trying to run a 29:20.”
“After 5K, I slipped into tempo pace. We had a couple guys help pace.”
On crowd:
“I did not think a lot of people would be here at 10 o'clock in the morning. It felt good to run the first race and get first.”
David Kletch, M 400M Hurdles (1st)
On win:
“This was my first open race of the year and my first time in hurdles since last years PAC-10 prelims when I tore a muscle.”
“Now in post-season, it is about letting it go. We want to be four time champions of the PAC-10s and I will do anything to help the team.”
On close finish:
“The last hurdle I made up a meter and a half. Nick Karren of Utah State is a tremendous competitor. It is good to have competition. “
On race overall:
“It was a good race. It was a little cold, and I had a little nerves, but a good race.”
“Getting to put on an Oregon uniform and competing here is incredible.”
Danny Marconi High Jump (1st)
On Win:
“I have been waiting for the 7-foot mark for a long time. I hit the 7-foot mark in practice so I was excited to see what I could do today.”
“My coach said, ?once you hit the 7-foot mark you just keep going up'.”
“Looking at a bar that high is a little intimidating, I mean it is taller than a doorway.”
Brianne Theisen W 100M Hurdles (1st)
On wind factor:
“I did not really notice it. In the blocks I did, but then I forgot about it.”
On race overall:
“It was the smoothest race this year. There are a few things I can improve on that were a little sloppy, but my smoothest race for sure.”
On training:
“I have not competed in three or four weeks, so this is the end of my third hard week of training. It will pay off in the end, having this solid training.”
On having more time to rest at meet:
“It is kind of nice. It is hard to do event after event after event in a meet like this. I feel I compete better when I am more relaxed.”
On post season:
“I am focusing on myself. If everything goes as planned, I will beat my PR. Again, I will not be peaking for Pac-10s, because my body is tired. I will push through the Pac-10s and see how it goes. The NCAAs is my focus.”
Sarah Bowman, New Balance, W 800M Run (1st)
On win:
“I have to start somewhere. The conditions were windy but it warmed up, which is nice for someone like me who does not want to warm up as hard.”
“I am happy with my time considering. I had even splits, which is not really how you do an 800 meters. I was expecting more grouping, but I felt strong, so I had no reason to hit the next level. It is different opening this late in the season, I have to be patient. Finding that is key.”
On races to come:
“I have the Road Race Miler, which is fun and it is in Minneapolis I think. It is not an easy course, but I am looking forward to trying something new.”
Andrew Wheating, Oregon, 1st 800m
On patience:
“I guess that's the big word. On the back stretch of the second lap they started to get away. The key is to just be patient.”
On Travis Thompson PR:
“I saw him way up there and then when I saw him at the finish line I was like, ?Is this really Travis?' I'm so jealous of his huge PR's.”
On focus:
“I kind of have the tendency to lose focus after the first day. The internet can be your best friend or your worst enemy checking my splits. I just have to save them for another time.”
On 800 meters:
“I haven't won a strong 800 meters. It bodes well for our team and our national team to have my teammates right behind me.”
Travis Thompson, Oregon, 2nd 800m, PR
On race:
“I had a race plan in my head to stay out ahead. I didn't really tell any of the coaches. I wanted to try something new, drop down a little and I did that today.”
“With 50 meters left, I'm always watching where Wheating is at. He's got such a good close its tough to beat him, but new PR today, I'm very happy.”
Cyrus Hostetler, Oregon, 1st Javelin Throw
On being back:
“It's fun to be back. We've been doing a lot of work, a lot of rehab. I owe a lot to my trainers being out here and working on me. This is a great place to train.”
On nerves:
“I woke up at about 8 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep. But once I got out here I was really relaxed. Warming up and hearing Marconi hit 7-2 and the crowd cheering really got me pumped. The weather broke nicely for us and I knew it was going to be a great day.”
“Breaking 70 is a big thing, especially after an ACL and MCL tear. I'm really happy, God smiled on me today.”
On the Javelin team:
“We are really helping each other to throw farther and farther. It's great to have that team comradery.”
Coach Vin Lannana, Oregon
On impressions:
“Good Stuff. We accomplished what we needed to accomplish. Nothing extraordinary today but I was glad Cyrus opened up. I told you after the UCLA meet that we had the makings for men's and women's national championship teams.”
On momentum:
“I feel pretty good with all of the kids right now. Travis Thompson, we were just waiting for a breakout race from him. Marconi really looked great against UCLA and I'm glad he's over the 7-foot barrier.”
On Andrew Wheating:
“Andrew's good. He needs to be able to string races like that together. He's really going to have to train these next 30 days on through the Pac-10's.”
On Pac-10's:
“We're going to try to be as good as we can be at the Pac-10's. That's always been a priority and we'll be going on all cylinders.”
