Oregon Opens Series With 5-0 Shutout
05/15/10 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 22 Oregon opened up its three-game series against East Tennessee State with a 5-0 shutout on Friday night at PK Park.
With the win, the Ducks improve to 32-18 on the year, while ETSU drops to 29-22.
Oregon's win was the sixth shutout of the season for the Ducks. The Buccaneers came into the game averaging 9.0 per game.
Oregon starter Tyler Anderson improved to 7-3 on the season, tossing 7 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed four hits and five walks, while striking out six.
The Ducks tallied 10 hits led by Eddie Rodriguez's 3-for-4, one RBI performance. The senior catcher now has 17 multiple-hit games, including 10 games with three or more hits.
Shawn Peterson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Dylan Gavin was 2-for-3 as well.
ETSU starter Bo Reeder (3-5) took the loss after surrendering five runs – three earned – on nine hits and two walks in six innings on the mound.
In the bottom of the first, Reeder had trouble with his control issuing Danny Pulfer four straight balls as the sophomore took first on a freebie. Two at-bats later, Jack Marder drove a RBI double just a few feet fair inside the right field line as the Ducks took a 1-0 advantage. Marder then went for an extra base on Rodriguez's single to left, and in a diving effort at home plate, he was gunned down on the throw and tag, while also suffering an injury.
That injury led to Oregon reliever Scott McGough making his first defensive appearance for the Ducks since May 17, 2009 at Arizona State. The right-hander took over at short, moving Pulfer back to second as Marder exited the game.
McGough finished his night with five defensive assists, his first single since April 18, 2009 at Cal, and just the second walk of his collegiate career at the plate.
In the bottom of the third, Marcus Piazzisi knocked a one-out single to left, stole second and moved to third on a balk. Rodriguez's RBI single to left brought Piazzisi home as Oregon led 2-0 after three.
In the bottom of the fourth, Peterson led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and moved to third on Gavin's ground out. Curtis Raulinaitis put the Ducks ahead 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Peterson home.
The Ducks added two runs in the sixth thanks to two ETSU errors and timely hitting from the Ducks. Eshleman reached first on an error by Buccaneer third baseman Garrett May, and moved to second on Peterson's infield single. Gavin laid down a bunt single in front of the plate that Reeder fielded. The pitcher's throw deflected off of Gavin who was safe at first, allowing Eshleman to score unearned on the second error of the inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Pulfer put down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Peterson to score unearned as the Ducks took a 5-0 lead.
The series resumes at 5 p.m., Saturday at PK Park.
