LOS ANGELES - In the second game of their three-game series, the No. 5 UCLA softball team hit four home runs en route to a 10-2, five-inning win over the No. 18 University of Oregon softball team Saturday night at Easton Stadium in Westwood.
The Bruins (35-9, 9-5) scored two runs in the first, three in the second, two in both the third and fourth and one in the fifth to end the contest meeting in the minimum number of innings via the eight-run rule. Saturday also marked the first time UO has fell in less than the seven-inning regulation length this season after pulling the feat five times against its foes.
Saturday's home run allowed total (4) doubled the previous season high by a Duck opponent (2) that had occurred three times in 2010 vs. Indiana, then-No. 13 California and then-No. 9 Arizona State. Coming into the weekend, UO had tied for the league lead in fewest homers allowed (15) with UCLA, compared with 44 last year.
UO (31-12, 7-7) scored both of its runs in the fifth inning on solo home runs by junior catcher Ashley Kivett and junior pitcher Brittany Rumfelt – their first and second of the season, respectively.
Kivett (2-for-2) also collected UO's other hit off UCLA starter Whitney Baker (3-1) in the second inning. Altogether, the Bruin junior struck out six, walked none, allowed three hits, and both runs allowed were earned.
Duck freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas also reached in the fourth inning with one out on a throwing error by the third baseman, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. However, she was stranded on a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Five UCLA batters hit safely, and four had multiple hits – GiOnna DiSalvatore (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Andrea Harrison (3-for-3, 4 RBI), Julie Burney (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and B.B. Bates (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
Harrison knocked in UCLA's first inning runs on a two-out, two run homer after a UO infield error. In the second inning, an opening walk was followed by a Burney home run and RBI triple by DiSalvatore. Bates later lined a 2-RBI double in the third, Harrison added a two-run homer in the fourth, and DiSalvatore hit a solo home run in the fifth to end the game.
Duck starter and sophomore Samantha Skillingstad (11-5) pitched one inning, struck out none, walked none, allowed two hits, and two of her four runs allowed were earned.
Sophomore Mikayla Endicott pitched the next 1.2 innings, struck out one, walked one, yielded four hits, and one of her three runs allowed were earned.
Rumfelt worked the final 1.1 innings, retired all four of her outs via strikeouts, walked two, gave up four hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned. The Lakeport, Calif., native made her 11th relief appearance of the season, and entered the series tied for fourth in the league this week with her then-mark of nine.
Looking ahead, the two teams return for a final game Sunday at noon, and live stats will be available at the www.UCLAbruins.com website.
