Ducks Improve To 5-0 In Win Over UC Irvine
11/26/11 | Women's Basketball
For the second straight game, Oregon (5-0) had five Ducks post double figures, led by senior Amanda Johnson and freshman Jordan Loera's 17 points apiece. The Ducks are now 5-0 for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign.
Loera knocked down a career-best five three pointers, as Oregon drained a season-best 12 buckets from behind the arc, while shooting a season-high 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from the three-point range. The Ducks also shot a season-best 50.7 percent (34-of-67) from the floor, totaling a season high 23 assists.
The first 20 minutes of play were the most competitive minutes of the game as UO ended up pulling a 33-31 lead into intermission. It featured seven ties and included senior Jasmin Holliday leading Oregon with seven points. None of those points were more important than her layup with 30 seconds left to give the Ducks their halftime advantage. Sophomore Ariel Thomas, who was making only her second appearance of the season, tied the game up at, 31-31, in the last minute on a three pointer off the dish from Holliday.
After taking that slight edge into the locker room, senior Nia Jackson opened up the second half with a three-point play to give the Ducks a 36-31 lead. Loera knocked down a three pointer a minute later and created some space between the teams to give Oregon a 39-31 lead.
The Ducks put together a 20-8 run over the next six minutes to go ahead by 20, running the tally to 59-39.
After being down by as many as 23 points in the second half, the Anteaters (1-5) fired back with an 11-4 run over a span of just 19 seconds to nudge their way back into the game, but freshman Lexi Petersen put down a layup with 31 seconds left in the game to record the final score of 89-77.
In addition to Johnson and Loera, Holliday and sophomore Deanna Weaver added 11 points, and Thomas chipped in 10.
Johnson led Oregon on the boards with nine rebounds, ending her streak of double-double games at five. Laura Stanulis led Oregon with a game-high six assists.
Kassandra McCalister had a game-high 29 points, including a 4-for-8 performance from behind the arc for UC Irvine. Jazmyne White had 15 and Methlyn Onogomuho added 10.
