
Ducks Grab 64-59 Victory Over UTEP

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Johnathan Loyd scored 24 points and made a career-high six 3-pointers to lead Oregon past UTEP 64-59 on Tuesday night.
Olu Ashaolu added 13 points for the Ducks (4-1), who won their fourth straight.
Michael Perez scored 18 for the Miners (1-4), who shot 50 percent but were just 6-for-16 from the free throw line. John Bohannon had 13 points and nine rebounds.
Loyd, a sophomore guard, shot 8-for-11, including 6-of-7 on 3-pointers. He scored 18 in the second half, breaking a 23-23 halftime tie with the first of his four second-half 3-pointers in the opening minute.
UTEP's Malcolm Moore sank two free throws to cut it to 60-59 with 34 seconds left. But E.J. Singler broke through the Miners' press and found Ashaolu on the baseline for a dunk and a 62-59 edge with 21.4 seconds left.
Oregon's Garrett Sim finished the scoring with two free throws.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Ducks opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 35-28 with 14:26 in the game.
- Oregon shot for a worse percentage than its opponent for the first time this season. Ducks went 20-of-46 for 43.5percent, while the Miners were 26-of-53 for 49.1 percent.
- Johnathan Loyd registered career-highs in the following categories: points (24), field goals made (8) and 3-pointers made (6).
- It's just the second time that Loyd has led the team in scoring. He scored a team-high 12 points in UO's 68-62 home win over USC on Jan. 13, 2011.
- Loyd is the fourth different Oregon player (in five games) to lead the team in scoring. That list includes Tony Woods, Garrett Sim and E.J. Singler.
- Loyd is the third different Duck to have tallied 20 or more points this season, joining Sim and Singler.
- Olu Ashaolu posted a season-high 13 points (6-of-9 on field goals), reaching double-figures in back-to-back games. He had 12 points in UO's road win over Nebraska last week.
