BOULDER, Colo. – The Oregon women's tennis team will enter Pac-10 play on a high note thanks to a 6-1 win over New Mexico on Saturday.
With the win, the Ducks improve to 6-2 in dual play and have won two consecutive duals, halting a two-dual skid in the process.
“It was good to come out here and leave with two wins after having a tough weekend last week,” head coach Paul Reber said. “I think our performance this weekend will help give everyone more confidence going into our first Pac-10 duals next week.”
The Ducks' 45th-ranked doubles pairing of Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski improved their dual record to 7-0 and 17-4 overall by defeating Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueava, 8-5. UO clinched the doubles point with No. 2 pairing Julia Metzger and Trudie du Toit downing Michaela Bezdickova and Nikolina Grbac, 8-4.
UO stayed in control in singles play by winning five of the six matches to finish the win. No. 106 Smatova took down UNM's Bezdickova (6-3, 6-1) at No. 1 to move to 6-2 in dual play (14-7 overall). Skowronski also earned her sixth dual victory at No. 2 singles by dispatching Grbac (7-5, 6-4) in straight sets as well.
Oregon's all freshmen trio at the bottom half of the lineup rounded out its scoring on the day, with each newcomer won in straights sets. Rabea Stuckemann improved to 6-2 in duals by defeating Kristin Eggleston (6-4, 6-3) at No. 4, Pascale Neubert moved to 4-2 in her career with a win over Michaela Oldani (6-0, 7-6 [7-5]) at No. 5 and Lana Buttner jumped to 4-1 in dual play with a victory over Laura Richardson (7-6 [7-4], 6-3) at No. 6.
The Ducks continue their February road swing with a trip to the Pac-10 Bay Area schools. Oregon is back in action on Feb. 25 when it faces top-ranked Stanford.
