STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (11-2) got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon with an 8-0, five-inning win over San Jose State (8-5) in its second game at the Libby Matson Tournament.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Moore (5-1) struck out seven, walked one and allowed only one hit, a bloop by BranDee Garcia to center field in the first inning.
Moore was also one of five Ducks that hit safely in the game with her 1-for-2 day at the plate.
Junior infielder Kelsey Chambers smacked her team-leading fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right center field in the bottom of the fifth, to give UO its sixth regulation-shortened victory of the season via the eight-run rule.
Sophomore outfielder Allie Burger also hit safely twice with singles in the first and third innings, and the latter knocked in her sixth RBI of the season.
Sophomore second baseman Kaylan Howard and freshman infielder Kailee Cuico also reached base via hits in UO's six-run third inning.
Oregon's other runs in the stanza came via a delayed steal home by freshman catcher Alexa Peterson, a bases-loaded walk to Chambers, a fielder's choice ground-out by senior Kaitlin Vitek, and a throwing error by the second baseman on a fielder's choice.
San Jose State starter Jennifer Ames (3-3) struck out one, walked three, gave up five hits and five of her six runs allowed were earned. She was followed by Janessa Gutierrez (1.2 innings, 0 SO, 0 BB, 0 H, 0 R) and Alex Molina (0.1 innings, 1 H, 0 SO, 0 BB, 2 ER).
Earlier Saturday, Pacific (6-2) came back from an 0-2 deficit to beat UO, 4-2, after it scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Earlier in the game, Cuico connected on her second homer of the season, a two-run bomb in the fourth inning.
Looking ahead, UO returns to action Sunday morning to face San Jose State at 10 a.m. and Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. at Bill Simoni Field on the Pacific University campus.
