LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Oregon got strong individual performances out of Pavlina Smatova
and Julia Metzger
, but it wasn't enough as the women's tennis team fell at No. 47 Long Beach State, 5-2, on Friday.
Smatova and Metzger each picked up singles victories to account for the Ducks' (7-12) scoring on the day. At No. 1 singles, 116th-ranked Smatova outlasted Anais Dallara with a three-set victory (6-2, 1-6, 6-2) at No. 1 singles. Metzger built momentum by winning a first-set tiebreaker and pulled out a straight-set win over Deborah Armstrong (6-2, 6-1) at the third spot.
Despite the wins, Long Beach State secured the win by sweeping all three doubles matches, though the top two were tight 8-6 and 8-5 decisions in favor of the 49ers. LBSU also won four singles matches, three of which were in straight sets.
Rabea Stuckemann did go the distance with LBSU's Sarah Cantlay, but Cantley ended up pulling out the victory (6-1, 3-6, 6-2).
Oregon returns to the court on Saturday when it faces No. 24 San Diego at 10 a.m.
