01/21/12 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the dual season by defeating the Montana State Bobcats, 7-0, in the second half of their opening day doubleheader. The Ducks (2-0) have yet to drop a match in singles or doubles play in 18 total matches thus far.
"It's good to be going again," remarked men's head coach Nils Schyllander. "We started off a little rusty, but I think we woke up throughout the morning. All in all, it was a pretty good day. I thought we played some really good tennis for the first day."
Oregon got consistent play from everyone in their lineup, highlighted by sophomore Alex Rovello's dominant performance at No. 1 singles.
"Alex did a great job," said Schyllander. "I thought he played very aggressive. I was glad to see him come forward more on the court and translate what he's practiced into match play."
The Portland, Ore. native downed Niklas Brandes 6-2, 6-1 for his second win of the day. In doubles, Rovello paired with senior Jose Izquierdo to beat Montana State's Lander Jewett and Javier Martin-Morillas, 8-2. Izquierdo, appearing in his first dual action of the season, was victorious in his lone singles match over Diego Campos 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Elsewhere, the Ducks received impressive outings from both junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier for the second dual in a row. The two paired for the second time in doubles to face Brandes and Markus Schleuter, winning, 8-5. In singles play, Mullen defeated Alberto Fuentes 7-5, 6-1 while Cambier was victorious over Schleuter 6-1, 6-2.
Rounding out Oregon's performance was junior Aaron Clissold and freshman Daniel Sardu. The two combined for the second straight time to defeat the Bobcat tandem of Fuentes and Campos, 8-2. In singles play, Clissold started the scoring for the Ducks by beating Kenny Dodd 6-2, 6-1. Sardu, competing at No. 5 singles, clinched the dual victory for Oregon with his victory over Prithi Sivasubraman 6-1, 6-2.
The Oregon men will next welcome Idaho into the Student Tennis Center where they look to continue their hot start to the spring schedule. The Ducks are wary of the kind of opponent Idaho presents itself as.
"We have to get ready; we have a tough Idaho team coming into town," concluded Schyllander. "We'd like the get the entire tennis community behind us, but we're excited."
Come check out the Ducks on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 4 p.m. when they take on the Idaho Vandals in the Student Tennis Center located next to Howe Field behind McArthur Court.
