Oregon Outlasts Pacific, 4-3 on the Road

STOCKTON, Calif.- The University of Oregon women's tennis team won the first of three slated matches this weekend (Jan. 27-29) by upending Pacific (2-2) in a hard-fought 4-3 victory. The Ducks (2-0) received impressive performances from their veterans senior Trudie du Toit and junior Julia Metzger in the team's first outdoor dual of the season.

"The more matches we get to play outside, the more comfortable we'll get and the better we'll play," said women's head coach Paul Reber. "It was nice to win the first of our three- match trip and we're looking forward to playing a tough Santa Clara team."

Metzger and du Toit started the scoring for the Ducks as the two doubled to defeat the Pacific tandem of Susan Te and Gergana Boncheva, 8-3. In singles, du Toit took down Boncheva 7-6 (3), 6-3 at the No. 4 position while Metzger sealed the Oregon victory at No. 2 singles by defeating Julia Hansen, 6-4, 7-5.

In other doubles action, sophomore Pascale Neubert and freshman Haley Driver were victorious in their No. 3 matchup against Summer Irvin and Regina Suarez, 8-6. The No. 3 doubles win secured what would be a pivotal first point in a dual that came down to the fourth singles match. In singles, it was Driver taking down Pacific's Suarez, 6-3, 6-4 for the first duals singles point.

At No. 1 doubles for the Ducks, junior Patricia Skowronski and freshman Sofia Hager were defeated by Iveta Masarova and Julia Hansen, 8-4. Skowronski and Hager each went on to drop their singles matches losing to Masarova 6-3, 6-3 and Te 7-6 (5), 6-3 respectively.

The Ducks next travel to Santa Clara, Calif. to take on the No. 71 Santa Clara Broncos Sat. Jan 28 at 11 a.m. The Broncos defeated the Spartans of San Jose State on Fri. (Jan 27), 7-0. Oregon will complete their three-match road trip in San Jose when they take on the Spartans Sun. (Jan 29) at noon.
