Ducks upend Hawkeyes 4-2 in Iowa City.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Ending a stretch of eight consecutive matches against ranked opponents, the 64th-ranked Oregon women's tennis team went on the road and fought its way to a 4-2 victory over No. 41 Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center on Friday.
The Ducks (11-5, 2-2) have gone 4-4 against ranked teams over their difficult stretch, including winning three of their last four such matches. The Hawkeyes (8-8, 2-3) marked the highest ranked win of the season while UO avenges a tough 4-3 loss to Iowa a season ago.
After Iowa claimed the first doubles match of the afternoon, Oregon battled back to win the next two to take the doubles point with wins on courts on and two. UO's top duo of Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons took down UI's top and 28th-ranked pair, 6-4, to claim the 14th doubles point in 16 matches. The win marked the second victory over a ranked doubles team for Jagare and Symons.
In singles action, four of the six singles matches went the full three sets. The Ducks won three of the four three-set matches, with the fourth going unfinished after clinching the victory.
The Hawkeyes evened the match and then took a 2-1 lead after wins at Nos. 1 and 2, but Hinata Furutani pulled out a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win on court five to tie the match again.
Patsy Daughters, who also dropped her first set, gave the Ducks their third team point with her 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, and then Bridget Mihulka sealed the win on court six with her 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
For Mihulka, it was her team-leading 12th singles win of the season (12-2). Both Daughters and Furutani pushed their spring singles records to 7-4.
As a team, Oregon boasts a 47-21 combined dual singles record to pair while going 27-10 in doubles play.
The Ducks finish their Midwest trip at Nebraska on Sunday (10 a.m. PT).
