THE ADMIRAL JOHN DICK TO BE HONORED SATURDAY
UO Athletics announced that Saturday's UO-WSU contest will be Military Appreciation Day. All active and retired military members receive 50 percent off admission to the game.
In addition, the late John Dick, who was the last surviving starter from the UO's 1939 “Tall Firs” NCAA Championship team, will be recognized in a halftime ceremony. He was a retired U.S. Navy Admiral.
As a senior and team captain in 1939-40, not only was Dick named an All-American and All-Pacific Coast Conference, but he was also president of the student body. He led the PCC North in scoring (10.7 ppg), and his 75 field goals tied what was then the school single-season record.
The three-year letterman's No. 18 is one of seven jerseys retired by the University. Beginning with his enrollment as a freshman in 1936-37, Dick was associated with the University for some seven decades.
ASSIST TOTALS NO COINCIDENCE IN OREGON'S WINS THIS YEAR
Unselfish play has been a key in UO's 17 victories this season, as the Ducks have recorded more assists than the opponent in 13 of those wins. Oregon is 13-1 this season when dishing out more assists than the opposition.
In the games where UO has more assists, the Ducks margin of victory is almost six points better than their season average for all games: +9.8 as compared to +3.9 in all games. Oregon's two largest victories in 2011-12 are 25-point triumphs over Southeast Missouri State and Washington, both of which came in games when the Ducks had more assists than the opponent.
Oregon's shooting percentages are also up when registering more assists: 48.3 percent versus 45.1 percent in all games. UO is also three percentage points better from behind the 3-point arc: 39.2 percent versus 36.6 percent in all games.
The Ducks' primary ball-handlers are largely responsible for UO's assist totals in those games. Devoe Joseph (36), Garrett Sim (38), E.J. Singler (39) and Johnathan Loyd (52) have accounted for 165 of the 212 assists and collectively maintain a 1.7 assist to turnover ratio in those games.
SINGLER IS OREGON'S MR. CONSISTENCY
Junior forward E.J. Singler (bio on page 18) leads the team with 311 total points (13.0 ppg) and has grabbed a team-high 133 total rebounds (5.5 rpg). Singler has taken -- and made -- the most shots of any Duck this season (100-of-217, .461).
Singler ranks second in the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (.890, 81-of-91) and third in school history for career free throw percentage (.861, 230-of-267). As of Feb. 10, Singler ranked 11th nationally in free throw percentage (leader: 93.2 percent, Robby Ptacek, Central Connecticut State).
The 6-6 forward from Medford, Ore., has reached double-figures in scoring in 20 of the 24 games this season. He's scored 10 or more points in 54 of his 95 career games at UO. Singler has also led the Ducks in rebounding on eight occasions this season (and 30 times in his career).
Season highlights for Singler include: a 13-point and a season-best 13-rebound effort at Colorado for his first double-double of the season (fourth career). He scored a career-high 26 points in UO's home win over UCLA, making 16-of-17 from the free throw line. Singler scored 20 of UO's 60 total points earlier this year at Washington, a game where he also grabbed nine boards. He also posted 21 points against SE Missouri State.
Singler ranks among the Pac-12 active leaders in career statistics: fifth in rebounds (490) and sixth in career points (964).
With a 13.0 points per game average in 2011-12, Singler is on pace to eclipse the 1,000-point mark this season. Singler has 964 points in 95 career games for a 10.1 ppg scoring average. He is looking to become the 31st player in school history to reach the scoring mark.
Singler is one of two Ducks to have started every game this season (joined only by Garrett Sim). In fact, Singler has started the last 69 games for UO dating back to his freshman season. He started all 39 games a year ago and 22-of-32 games as a freshman.
OREGON IN THE CONFERENCE TITLE CHASE
Oregon (8-4) is tied for third in the Pac-12 standings (Arizona and Colorado). As of Feb. 10, UO is ranked No. 79 according to RealTimeRPI.com. Only three other Pac-12 schools ranks higher (No. 48 Cal, No. 68 Colorado and No. 71 Washington).
The Ducks have been effective away from Eugene, as half of their league wins have come on the road (4-2). The other 11 league schools are a combined 19-of-53 in road games.
In Pac-12 games only, UO ranks first in 3-pointers made (85), third in scoring offense (71.6 ppg) and 3-point percentage (.381), and fourth in field goal percentage (.455), free throw percentage (.710) and blocks (3.6 bpg). Individually, Devoe Joseph is fourth (16.3 ppg) and E.J. Singler is eighth (13.8 ppg) in scoring.
UO FEATURES BALANCED SCORING ATTACK
Seven different Ducks have led the team in scoring this season: Devoe Joseph (nine times), Garrett Sim (six times), E.J. Singler (six times), Olu Ashaolu (twice) and Carlos Emory, Johnathan Loyd and Tony Woods (one time each).
Ten of UO's 11 scholarship players have reached double-figures in scoring. The leaders in that category are Singler (20 times), Joseph (17) and Sim (15). In addition, five different Ducks have dropped 20+ points in a game this season (Joseph, Sim and Singler three times each, Ashaolu and Loyd once).
JOSEPH EMBRACES ROLE AS OREGON'S TOP SCORER
Since becoming eligible to compete on Dec. 10, senior guard Devoe Joseph (bio on page 21) has averaged a team-high 15.7 points per outing. He's led the team in field goals made (95), field goals attempted (210) and minutes played (34.8 mpg) in those 18 games. The Ducks are 13-5 with him in the lineup.
Joseph has scored in double-figures 17 times and has a 30-point effort against Stanford in the books. He's led the team in scoring nine times this season (most of any Duck). Joseph has scored in double-figures in 10 straight games.
Now that he's played in 75 percent of UO's games on the year, Joseph is eligible for top 10 rankings among Pac-12 players (all games). He currently ranks second in 3-pointers made per game (2.4), third in minutes per game (34.8), fourth in 3-point percentage (.448), fifth in scoring (15.7 ppg), eighth in free throw percentage (.803) and ninth in steals (1.4 spg).
The 6-4 guard from Toronto, Ontario, has bettered his scoring average to 16.3 points per game in Pac-12 games only, shooting 47.6 percent (30-of-63) on 3-pointers in those league games. He's also shooting 81.0 percent on free throws (34-of-42) against Pac-12 teams.
BLOCKED SHOTS A FACTOR FOR DUCKS
The Ducks have a 10-2 record in games where they tally four or more blocks. UO's only losses came in the season-opener at No. 7 Vanderbilt and two weeks ago against Oregon State. In 23 of the 24 outings this season, Oregon has recorded at least one block. The Ducks are 9-1 this season when they record more blocks than their opponent (L, vs. Oregon State).
Junior center Tony Woods (bio on page 24) ranks second in the Pac-12 with 38 blocks (1.6 bpg). Woods has rejected 23 shots (1.9 bpg) in the Ducks' 12 conference games this year. As a team, UO ranks fifth in blocks (3.8 bpg) amongst the rest of the league.
Woods' total in 2011-12 ranks tied for third all-time for blocks in a single season at Oregon (w/Bob Fife and Chris Christoffersen). With a possible seven games remaining on the schedule, Woods is projected to break the school record for blocks in a season as he is just five shy from the mark (42, Blair Rasmussen; 1983-84).
Woods had a career-high five blocks in the win over Portland State, the most blocks for a UO player since Dec. 31, 2009 (Dunigan at Washington State). That five-block game ranks tied for second in school history for most blocks in a single game.
SIM AVERAGING CAREER-HIGHS THIS SEASON
Senior guard Garrett Sim (bio on page 12) is averaging career-highs in points per game (11.8 ppg), field goal percentage (.492, 93-of-189), 3-point percentage (.462, 48-of-104) and free throw percentage (.860, 49-of-57). He ranks third in the conference for both 3-point percentage and free throw percentage, while seventh for 3-pointers made per game (2.0).
Sim's does not have enough made field goals to qualify for the national rankings (minimum 5 FGs made/game; 2.5 3-PT FGs made/game). However, Sim's 3-point field goal percentage would rank tied for eighth and his free throw percentage would rank tied for 39th nationally.
In 126 career games, Sim has 947 points (eighth) and 230 assists (eighth) which both rank in the top 10 of the Pac-12's active career leaders. In addition, Sim's 160 career 3-pointers ranks second and his 94 career steals ranks seventh.
Sim is on pace to match Joevan Catron's modern school record for games played (133). With a 11.7 ppg average this season, Sim is on track to become the 32nd player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. He recently moved into 10th all-time for career 3-pointers made (160). Sim is also just 10 steals shy of ranking 10th all-time at UO for career steals (94).
DUCKS ARE WINNING CLOSE GAMES THIS SEASON
Oregon is 10-2 this season in games decided by fewer than 10 points (4-1 in games decided by less than five points). UO's only losses in those games came at Colorado (72-71) and at home to OSU (76-71). The Pac-12 team with the next best mark in games decided by less than 10 points is CU (8-4).
In those tight games, the Ducks had the advantage in all three shooting percentages (UO / Opponent): overall field goal percentage (.448 / .431), 3-point percentage (.368 / .316) and free throw percentage (.716 / .682).
UO has closed-out several games on the free throw line. The Ducks are shooting 86.3 percent (69-of-80) from the charity stripe in the final five minutes of games decided by less than 10 points. A big difference from the 69.2 percent (371-of-536) they are making on the season.
UO's ball handlers have been terrific at the line in crunch time of close games. E.J. Singler (23-of-24), Garrett Sim (14-of-15), Devoe Joseph (14-of-17) and Johnathan Loyd (10-of-12) are a combined 61-of-68 (.897) in those pressure situations.
UO INKS THREE PLAYERS DURING EARLY SIGNING PERIOD
Dana Altman announced the signing of three prep standouts to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Ducks beginning in 2012-13 are Dominic Artis (Richmond, Calif. / Findlay Prep), Ben Carter (Las Vegas, Nev. / Bishop Gorman HS) and Damyean Dotson (Houston, Texas / Jack Yates High School).
It is the second straight season that Altman has signed a strong recruiting class. UO brought in a consensus top 25 recruiting class a year ago according to Scout.com (No. 20), Rivals.com (No. 21) and ESPN.com (No. 23).
