PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (6-2) staked its fifth straight win Saturday with its 10-6 victory over Northwestern (4-8) in the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs.
After a seven-run third inning put Oregon up, 7-0, the feisty Wildcat squad answered with a fourth-inning grand slam to pull within three runs.
However, three Duck runs in the seventh inning put the game back out of reach, as UO scored a season high 10 more runs for the second time this season.
After stranding three runners in the first inning and two more in the second, UO banked a season-high for runs in an inning (7) after sending 10 batters to the plate in the third.
Junior second baseman Kaylan Howard opened scoring with an RBI double. Freshman Hannah Melick and senior Christie Nieto both followed with two-run, pinch-hit singles, and freshman Janie Takeda added another RBI hit up the middle. Kelsey Chambers - the inning's first batter who had singled - drove in its last run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Ducks' final runs in the game came in the seventh on a three-run homer by sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico - her second round-tripper of the season.
For the game, eight Ducks hit safely (although none had multiple hits) - and others that claimed hits included sophomore catcher Alexa Peterson and junior right fielder Samantha Pappas.
In the circle, junior Jessica Moore (5-2) recorded all but one out in the contest, struck out a season-high nine, walked two, gave up three hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
Freshman Karissa Hovinga recorded the other out, but was the victim of the four-run shot by Northwestern frosh Oliva Duehr.
Northwestern added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on a bases-loaded infield single, and infield ground-out, respectively.
Northwestern starter and freshman Amy Letourneau (3-5), pitched the first 2.1 innings, struck out three, walked five, allowed five hits, and all six of her runs allowed were earned. Meghan Lamberth pitched the next 0.2 innings, struck out none, walked one, gave up one hit, and one earned run.
Sammy Albenese pitched the final four innings, struck out two, walked five, allowed two hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for the Wildcats, five players hit safely once.
Saturday's outcome gave UO its second win in the series and first since its 10-0 victory in 1989. Since then, Northwestern had won the previous four meetings between 1998-2009.
Looking ahead to Sunday's final day action at the Big League Dreams Complex, the Ducks have contests vs. New Mexico State at 9 a.m. and Cal Poly at 11 a.m., respectively.
