No. 19 Ducks Corral Mustangs, 11-1, in Six Innings

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (8-2) capped action in the Cathedral City Classic with an 11-1, six-inning win Sunday over Cal Poly (2-7) - its seventh straight win of the season.
On the mound for UO, freshman Karessa Hovinga (2-0) won her second collegiate start, struck out three, walked one, gave up five hits, and her run allowed was earned.
En route to a team season high 11 runs, senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers opened scoring in the first inning with her 29th career home run - still sixth-most for all-time for UO and two behind Duck Hall of Famer Kathy Stahl.
The Concord, Calif., native did climb a position on the Oregon all-time career RBI list to ninth (105), and passed former teammate Monique Fuiava (10th, 103).
Oregon tacked on three more runs in the third inning thanks to an RBI single by freshman outifielder Sara Goodrum, sacrifice fly by freshman outifielder Janie Takeda, and RBI single by sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico.
In the fourth inning, freshman designated player Hannah Melick crushed her first collegiate homer to center field, and by game's end finished only a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
The Ducks claimed their fourth regulation-shortened win via the eight-run rule, thanks to a six-run sixth inning.
Junior second baseman Kaylan Howard hit her team-leading fourth homer of the season with one out to left field. The next five hitters also all hit safely, thanks to singles by sophomore catcher Alexa Peterson and junior outfielder Allie Burger, a two-run triple by Hannah Melick, an RBI single by senior Christie Nieto, and single by sophomore third baseman Courtney Ceo. Two batters later, UO's final run of the stanza came on a two-run single up the middle by Kelsey Chambers.
For Cal Poly, starter Jordan Yates (0-1) pitched three innings, struck out one, walked one, allowed six hits, and all five of her runs allowed were earned. Reliever Chloe Wurst worked three innings in relief, struck out four, walked none, yielded seven hits, and all six of her runs allowed were earned.At the plate for the Mustangs, Celina Lafrades led in hits (2-for-2), and three others collected single hits.
Cal Poly scored its only run in the second inning. After a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt, the runner tagged at second base on a fly to right field, then scored on an error by the third baseman receiving the throw.
Oregon staked its third perfect non-conference tourney effort in the three-year tenure of head coach Mike White with its 5-0 mark. UO opened with a 4-2 win Friday over No. 22 Nebraska, followed by 8-0 and 10-6 wins Saturday over No. 21 Oklahoma State and Northwestern, and a 7-1 win vs. New Mexico State earlier Sunday.
Earlier in his tenure, the Ducks had also won all five of their contests in the same tourney in 2010 and five contests in the 2011 Louisville Slugger Classic in Las Vegas.
For the six-game trip, Ceo led starters in hitting (.500), hits (7-for-14) and on-base percentage (.632).
Four others topped .400 - Nieto (.800, 4-for-5, 2 BB), Melick (.444, 4-for-9, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBI), Howard (.400, 6-for-15, 1 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB) and Peterson (.400, .400, 4-for-10).
On the mound, All-Pac-12 returnee and junior Jessica Moore staked a 1.05 ERA on the weekend, went 4-0, struck out 17, walked six, and allowed 18 hits in her 26.2 innings.
Looking ahead, UO returns to the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., Friday-Sunday, March 2-4, to play six games, including tilts against retuning World Series advancer Baylor, fellow 2011 NCAA veteran Illinois State, another pair of recent postseason advancers in North Carolina, Purdue and Virginia, and Pittsburgh.
