
Woo in Lead After Bandon Day 1; No. 9 Ducks in Second

BANDON, Ore. - The No. 9 University of Oregon men's golf team capped opening-day play Friday in the Bandon Dunes Championships in second place, three strokes behind the round leader, No. 3 Washington.
UO shot a three-over score of 287, while the Huskies carded an even-par 284 score on the par-71, 6,718-yard Bandon Trails course.
Oregon State and Long Beach State followed in a tie for third place at 291, and British Columbia and San Jose State followed in a fifth-place tie (295) in the 15-team field.
On the individual leaderboard, Duck individual entrant and freshman Jonathan Woo shot a three-under 68 in his first collegiate round, and owned a one-stroke advantage over Washington's Charlie Hughes (second, 69).
The Singapore native Woo carded three birdies on holes #3, 8 and 12, and logged par scores on the other 15 holes.
Among the Ducks' official team entries, two others shot par or better and stood top 10 overall - redshirt junior Robbie Ziegler (third-tie, 70) and Andrew Vijarro (seventh-tie, 71).
The Canby, Ore., native Ziegler led the squad for the first time this season and 18th time in his career, and his under-par score was his third of the year and 19th career-wise.Ziegler carded four birdies (on holes #9, 11, 14 and 16), one par (#10), 12 par scores (#1-8, 12-13, 15, 18) and one double bogey (#17).
Vijarro carded a par score for the second time this year and 10th time career-wise. The Bend native ended with two pars (#5, 8), 14 par scores (#1, 3, 6-7, 9-18) and two bogeys (#2, 4).
Seniors Eugene Wong and Daniel Miernicki followed in a tied for 19th place (73), and freshman Ben Itterman was tied for 66th overall (79).
Sophomore Ben Itterman stood fifth on the squad (66th-t, 79) in his first appearance for the squad this season.
Also competing as an individual, freshman Rak Cho (12th-t, 72) logged his first round of par this season, to go along with seven under-par scores in his prior 15 rounds in stroke play action. The native carded three birdies (#15, 16, 18), two pars (#2, 4), 12 par scores (#1, 3, 5-12, 14, 17) and one double-bogey (#13).
Four other Ducks also competed as individuals - redshirt junior Tyler Parker (48th-t, 76), redshirt senior Jack Paton (66th-t, 79), junior Jack Pennington (77th-t, 81) and freshman Tye Gabriel (85th, 87).
Friday birdie/par counts for the rest of the Oregon team and individuals follow: Wong (3/11), Miernicki (3/14), Itterman (1/9), Parker (3/11), Paton (2/9), Pennington (2/7) and Gabriel (-/9).
