EUGENE - Defending softball national champion Arizona State (32-4, 4-1) scored seven runs in the first two innings, then held off a Duck rally to win, 7-4, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Howe Field.

No. 16 Oregon (23-7, 2-3) did not go quietly, and scored all four of its runs in the fifth inning, and had the tying run on deck.

Sophomore Kailee Cuico and junior Kaylan Howard opened the fifth with a pair of doubles to account for the first run. After freshman pinch-hitter Jamie Rae Sullivan followed with a walk, junior Samantha Pappas added another RBI double for the second run. Sullivan added another run on a ground-out by junior Alexa Peterson, and sophomore Courtney Ceo added another run-scoring double for UO 's final run.

Ceo (2-for-3) led UO at the plate in hits, and four others hit safely once - senior Lindsey Chambers, Cuico, Howard and Pappas.

Duck freshman Karissa Hovinga (7-2) pitched her fifth complete game of the season, struck out three, walked four, allowed nine hits, and four of her seven runs allowed were earned.

ASU used all three of its pitchers, and starter Hilary Bach (15-0) stayed perfect on the season after she struck out two, walked one, allowed five hits and four earned runs in ehr 4.2 innings. Mackenzie Popescue got the final out in the fifth, then was relieved by Dallas Escobedo in the sixth inning. The latter player got the save for retiring the final six outs, struck out none, walked none, and allowed no hits or runs.

At the plate, Arizona State capitalized on three Duck errors in the opening two innings to stake all of their runs.

In the first inning, a single and fielding error by the pitcher put the opening batters on, and they scored on an infield ground-out and homer by Haley Steele.

In the second inning, ASU sent 10 batters to the plate and added four runs on five hits and two Duck errors. Alix Johnson and Annie Lockwood came up with RBI singles, and Nikole Afusia added a two-run single.

Two Sun Devils ended with multiple hits - Steele (2-for-3) and Caporuscio (2-for-4).

Earlier Saturday in the first game of the doubleheader, junior Jessica Moore (15-5) pitched a 3-0 shutout to hand ASU its second loss since the opening week of the season. With her 7 K's on the day, the returning All-Pac-12 pitcher raised her career tally to 586 - two more than the previous school record of Amy Harris (584, 2003-06).

"I was able to get ahead of the hitters and keep them off balance and hit my spots," Moore said. "I took it pitch by pitch and made every one count. There were times we needed some strikeouts and other times we went for ground balls. I struggled a little last weekend so I was ready to come back and try to prove myself against a good team."

Looking ahead, the two teams meet for their final game of the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. - an hour earlier than originally scheduled.
