In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Ducks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning. UO then added two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to win their fourth tourney opening game of 2012 in as many tries.
Hovinga struck out six, walked three, and allowed only four hits in her fourth complete game of the campaign. Her 'K' total was a season best, and bettered her total (5) in her complete game win vs. returning Missouri Valley Conference champion Illinois State last week.
At the plate for UO in the first inning, the opening three batters reached via a pair of singles by sophomore Courtney Ceo and senior Kelsey Chambers, sandwiched around a walk by freshman Janie Takeda. Chambers knocked in the first run for her team-leading fifth game-winning RBI of the season, and sophomore Kailee Cuico and junior Samantha Pappas drove in the other RBI on a sacrifice fly and single, respectively.
In the fourth, Pappas and senior Christie Nieto led off with a single and double, and freshman Jamie Rae Sullivan loaded the bases via a walk. Ceo knocked in a run with an infield ground-out, as did Takeda who added a two-out infield slap single to the pitcher when no one covered first base.
At the plate for the Ducks, Pappas and Ceo each connected on three hits, and four others hit safely once – Takeda, Kelsey Chambers, Nieto and Sullivan. The latter player also reached via a pair of walks in her fifth start of the season at third base.
Butler stranded nine runners in the contest, including two in the third, sixth and seventh innings, and single runners in three other innings.
The Bulldogs nearly scored in the third inning after an opening double by Erin Falkenberry. A sacrifice bunt attempt followed, and after a dropped throw at first base by the second baseman, the lead runner was cut down at home trying to score. A later walk became moot when Hovinga got the second and third outs via a fly ball and sliding catch on a foul pop by the catcher Ceo.
In the circle for Butler, starter Leah Bryn (2-2) pitched the first five innings, struck out none, walked five, allowed nine hits, and all six of her runs allowed were earned. She was relieved after she allowed the first two batters in the sixth to reach via a single and walk. Reliever Breanna Fisher pitched the last inning, struck out none, walked none, and allowed one hit and no runs.
At the plate for the Bulldogs, lead-off hitter Meaghan Sullivan went 2-for-4, and two other hitters hit safely once.
