Three Ducks Reach Title Matches at WSU Invitational
10/04/14 | Women's Tennis
PULLMAN, Wash. - Lina Akesson and Marlou Kluiving won their first two matches in the No. 3 and No. 4 Singles Divisions, respectively, and they earned championship-match berths Friday at the WSU Invitational in Pullman, Wash. Sofia Hager will also have a chance at winning a championship tomorrow thanks to a bye in the opening round and a second round victory.
“Today was a starting point for our program in terms of competing,” head coach Alison Silverio said. “We came out a little tentative and nervous in our first round matches. Everyone made improvements controlling their emotions in the second round and we were able to capitalize on more opportunities to finish."
Lina Akesson, a sophomore from Bunkeflostrand, Sweden, defeated Sophie Vickers from Idaho in the first round in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Akesson moved on to the second round and dispatched Emily Gould of Portland, 6-3, 6-0. She will play Washington State's Donika Bashota tomorrow in the No. 3 Singles Division championship match at 1 p.m.
It only took four sets over the course of two matches for Marlou Kluiving to reach the championship match in the No. 4 Singles Division. She bested Amanda Zuidema of Portland 6-3, 6-3, and then in the second she won 6-0, 7-5 over Holly Monahan of Washington State.
Kluiving will play Sofia Hager tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the No. 4 Singles Division championship match. Hagar received a bye in the opening round and then defeated Marina Reimers of Portland, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
In the No. 1 Singles Division, freshman Alyssa Tobita lost a hard-fought match in the first collegiate match of her career to Maja Mladenovic of Portland, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2. Tobita bounced back, however, and handled Idaho's Claire Yang, 6-1, 6-4 in her first consolation match.
Nicole Long was the other Duck competing in the No. 1 Singles Division. She lost her opening match to Lucy Butkovska of Portland, 6-3, 6-3, and then the senior lost her opening consolation match 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.
Nia Rose joined Tobita in playing her first collegiate match, but the New York City native unfortunately suffered a similar opening-round result and dropped her match, 6-3, 7-5 to Victoria Matejevic of Washington State. She rebounded in her consolation match and defeated Sophie Van den Aarssen of Portland, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Allie Hueffner suffered two losses on the day in the No. 2 Singles Division. She lost in the opening round to Idaho's Lucia Baldillos, 6-4, 6-1 and then in her consolation match to Jelena Lazarevich of Portland, 7-5, 7-5.
Kadie Hueffner was the other Duck to compete in the No. 3 Singles Division with Akesson. Hueffner dropped her opening round match to Saroop Dhatt of Portland, 6-1, 6-2, and then fell in her consolation match 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
“We are learning from each experience and focusing on consistency,” Silverio said. “Tomorrow will be another opportunity to gain momentum and to keep fighting through adverse situations.”
Doubles play begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. and singles will start at 1 p.m.
