Freshmen Lead The Ducks In Day Two of WSU Invitational

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshmen Alyssa Tobita and Nia Rose both won their consolation final matches Saturday at the WSU Invitational in Pullman, Wash. The Ducks finished the day 3-3 in singles play and 6-2 in doubles.
"We came out strong this morning in the doubles," head coach Alison Silverio said. "We were able to carry that momentum throughout the day. It was fun to watch our freshmen step up in their matches and see the whole team be united!"
Tobita defeated Washington State's Lize Leenknecht, 6-3, 6-0, in straight sets in the consolation final of the No. 1 Singles division. The freshman from Mililani, Hawaii, finished the tournament 2-1 in singles play.
Rose got the best of Portland's Jelena Lazarevich, 6-1, 6-4, also giving her a singles record of 2-1 on the weekend.
After dropping both of her matches yesterday, Nicole Long bounced back nicely and bested Claire Yang of Idaho by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Allie Hueffner dropped her match against Portland's Sophie Van den Aarssen, 6-3, 6-3.
In the No. 3 Singles division Lina Akesson lost in the championship match, 7-5, 6-0, to Donika Bashotam of Washington State. Kadie Hueffner lost a three-set match to Nastia Wasiukhina of Washington State, 4-6, 6-2.
Marlou Kluiving and Sofia Hagar did not play their championship match in the No. 4 Singles division. All teams who had competitors in the same match elected not to play.
The Ducks were led in doubles play in thanks to an undefeated day by the freshman team of Rose and Tobita. The two won, 8-4, over Mladenovic/Van der Aarssen of Portland in the first round of round robin play. In the second round, the pair handled Idaho's team of Vickers/Yang to a tune of 8-5.
Long and Hueffner split in their matches in the No. 1 Doubles division. They defeated Vicker/Yang of Idaho, 8-3, but then they dropped their following match to Butkovska/Lazarevic of Portland, 8-5.
Hagar and Kluiving teamed up in the No. 2 Doubles division and went 2-0 on the day. First they won over Reimers/Zuidema of Portland, 8-3, and then they beat Dhatt/Gould also of Portland, 8-1.
Akesson and Hueffner lost their first match to Bykova/Badillos of Idaho, 8-6, but they rebounded and defeated Portland's Reimers/Zuidema.
Singles play is finished for the tournament, but round robin doubles play resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m.
