WILMETTE, Ill. – Oregon shaved off one stroke from yesterday's team score and fired a third round 303 Tuesday morning to give the Ducks a cumulative 908, good for 11th place at the Windy City Collegiate Championships in Wilmette, Ill.
"We enjoyed competing against a strong field," assistant coach Teresa Puga said. "Even though the performance wasn't quite there, we are looking forward to attacking our second tournament of the week this upcoming weekend in North Carolina and applying what we learned this week."
How It Happened: The Ducks began the day teeing off on the back-nine. Caroline Inglis fired her second-consecutive 73 (75-73-73) and tied for 13th place in the individual standings. The Eugene native had three birdies on the day, giving her a total of eight for the tournament.
Cassy Isagawa began the day with three straight bogeys, but the senior stayed composed and finished the day with a 75. Isagawa was close to matching Inglis with a 73, but she double-bogeyed the par-4 7th down the stretch to end her day at 3-over par.
Cathleen Santoso and Kelsey Ulep represented the other two counting scores for Oregon. Santoso started the day 3-over after six holes of play, but the Sydney, Australia, native dug in and finished the last 12 holes 2-over par, giving her a 5-over 77 on the day. Overall, she took second place on the team with a 229 (78-74-77).
Ulep began the day with a 42 on the front side, but the freshman showed some grit and fired an even-par 36 on the back side to finish with a 78.
USC won the team title with an 876, and the Trojans' own Annie Park won the individual title with a 211 (73-69-69).
What It Means: The Ducks got their feet wet in their first fall tournament of the year and gained valuable experience against top-flight competition.
Rough Start: Oregon was plagued by a rough start in their first three holes of the day – No.10, 11 and 12. As a team, the Ducks were 10-over par on those three holes today.
Bounced Back: To their credit, the team hung in and managed to salvage the remainder of the back nine along with the front nine as well. Ulep improved six strokes from her back nine to her front nine (42-36), Isagawa was even-par for the rest of the day after her initial three bogeys and Inglis recovered from her opening-hole double-bogey with a 1-under performance in her remaining round.
Par 3's: Oregon's best holes of the tournament were par-3's. The Ducks recorded a 3.18 stroke average for the par-3's and finished the tournament only 8-over par on some difficult holes.
Up Next: The Ducks will fly straight from Illinois to their next destination, Chapel, Hill, N.C., for the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational from Friday, Oct. 10 to Sunday, Oct. 12.
