Detroit vs. Oregon - Quotes
11/18/14 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman - Oregon Head Coach
On Abdul-Bassit...
“I thought he gave us a big lift. He gave us some great offensive rebounds. Defensively, he gave us some good minutes. I was really pleased with his effort. He's been a little banged up here early, but last year during this time he wasn't ready at all in November. He's got a good stroke, he's athletic, he likes to guard, so he can give us a lot of good minutes. We just have to keep him healthy.”
On turnovers...
“In the first ten minutes we had some really bad turnovers. Nine turnovers just trying stuff, and we got ourselves in trouble just trying some stuff.”
On the offensive performance...
“Our execution wasn't very good. We had nine or 10 turnovers at the half and then we just didn't execute much. We had some bad positions in the first and second half, but a couple of those possessions against the zone were not good. We have a lot to work through to make sure we have the best shot available. We are in a bit of a hurry, offensively. A number of possessions we didn't make them guard very long and took questionable shots, but I think our guys will learn.”
Jalil Abdul-Bassit – Guard, Senior
On his career-high scoring performance…
“I knew from warm-ups that I was feeling pretty good and I told a few of my teammates that I was feeling good. But I just wanted to do whatever it took to win the game.”
“It felt good to make wide open shots for my teammates.”
“I just have to see the first shot go in and I feel like I can make any shot after that. It was really mainly my teammates, though--they kept me up and kept telling me to be aggressive.”
On being a team leader…
“Coach came to me, Joe and Elgin and told us we would have a lot on our shoulders. I came in and tried to do as much as I could for the team.”
On areas where the team must improve…
“Guarding and rebounding. Defense is our emphasis right now, so we just have to keep building on that.”
Ray McCallum - Detroit Head Coach
On the overall game...
“I thought the first half was more to our liking. It was a tie game, tied on the glass, playing our pace. We knew they wanted to score in the 80's and 90's, so we wanted to slow it down. But it just got away from us, and when Juwan Howard Jr. picked up his fourth foul with 11 minutes (left) I thought they (Oregon) responded the right way and we didn't handle it very well.”
On Joe Young...
“I thought we did a great job on him in the first half, and we knew that he would get going and he sure did.”
On moving forward, takeaways from the game...
“We had two freshmen out there for a lot of minutes and they gained some valuable experience tonight – Jaleel Hogan and Paris Bass – and it's just a great experience playing in this kind of environment, playing against high-major athletes, something we can learn from.”
