Tar Heels Take Down the Ducks, 4-0
01/23/15 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Oregon men's tennis team ran into a buzz saw Friday afternoon when No. 7 North Carolina sprinted to a 4-0 victory over the No. 44 Ducks at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Oregon will face No. 36 Alabama tomorrow at noon (PT) in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
How It Happened: The Tar Heels wasted no time in jumping out to a lead in doubles. The Ducks' No. 1 team of Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos were defeated by North Carolina's top doubles team of Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur 6-1, and Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold let their doubles match on court three slip in favor of UNC's Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider by a score of 6-4.
Daan Maasland and Daniel Sardu were trailing at the No. 2 position 5-4, but with the doubles point already decided, their match went unfinished.
North Carolina carried their momentum into singles when the Tar Heels' Oystein Steiro took down Joey Swaysland 6-1, 6-2 on court six to make it a 2-0 lead for the home team.
Maasland was the next Duck to fall when the 27th-ranked singles player, Schneider, beat the junior 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles position.
The Tar Heels clinched the match (4-0) on court three when Amos fell to Clark 6-3, 6-2.
Farin was trailing the No. 2 singles player in the country – Brayden Schnur – 6-4, 3-2 in the second set, Sardu was tied in the second set after dropping the first against Esben Hess-Olesen (6-1, 3-3) and Stevens was in a battle with Jack Murray (6-2, 5-3) on court five.
What It Means: The Ducks took their first loss of the year and now sit at 3-1. Oregon will regroup and look to pick up a victory tomorrow in the consolation match. North Carolina will go on to play No. 38 Virginia Tech tomorrow in the championship match for a spot in the ITA National Men's Indoor Team Championship.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We ran into a very hot UNC team today, they really handed it to us. We had our chances in doubles play but did not convert it into the very important doubles point. In singles, they were simply too good today.”
“Tomorrow we will face off with a very feisty Alabama team, we need to get over today and get emotionally ready for a battle.”
Next Up: UO will face the Crimson Tide tomorrow at noon (PT).
