01/25/15 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 44 Ducks (4-1) bounced back in resounding fashion on Saturday and defeated No. 36 Alabama 4-0 in the consolation match at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. UO's win over the Crimson Tide is their first win over a ranked team this season.
How It Happened: Oregon seized control of the match immediately by winning the doubles point. The No. 2 team of Daan Maasland and Daniel Sardu defeated Alabama's Sean Donohue and Stuart Kenyon 6-3, and the Ducks' top team of Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos closed out the point with a tight 7-5 victory over Becker O'Shaughnessy and Korey Lovett. Cormac Clissold and Simon Stevens were tied 5-5 on court three and their match went unfinished.
Maasland quickly gave UO a 2-0 advantage in the overall match when he took down Stuart Kenyon 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The junior's victory gives him a 4-1 record in duals and a 9-3 overall record including the fall season.
Farin made it 3-0 in favor of the Green and Yellow after he beat O'Shaughnessy at the No. 1 position in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. The Etterbeek, Belgium native has yet to lose a match a singles match in the dual season (3-0).
Amos dealt the knockout blow when he defeated Nikko Madregallejo in a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) slugfest on court three that gave Oregon the victory. He leads the team with 11 overall wins on the year.
Sardu and Clissold's matches were into third sets when play stopped, and Stevens was in the middle of a second-set battle 6-4, 6-6 (5-3).
Ranked Crimson Tide: Even though Alabama came into the match with a slightly higher ranking, the Ducks managed to log wins against their highest-ranked singles player and doubles team.
Maasland and Sardu took care of the No. 6 doubles team in the ITA Southern Region when they bested Donohue and Kenyon, and Amos clinched the match over the 10th-ranked singles player in the ITA Southern Region when he outlasted Madregallejo.
Shutouts: Today's victory marks the third time this year that Oregon shut out their opponent in a win. The Ducks' 6-1 win over Loyola Marymount would have counted as a shutout in a similar format as today, but the two teams played out all of the matches.
The last time Oregon shutout a ranked opponent was last year on March 12 when the Ducks took down No. 39 Drake on the road by a score of 4-0.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“We came out with great energy in doubles play today, we knew Alabama would bring it so I was very pleased to see us come out and get it done the 'Oregon Way'. Our enthusiasm carried over into singles play. I am very pleased with today's performance, it was a complete effort.”
Next Up: Oregon will return home to play Nevada on Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. and also on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center.
