Doubles Duo of Amos/Soemarno Lead Ducks on Final Day of UCSB Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno won the flight A doubles championship to power the Ducks on the final day of the UCSB Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening match of the day, the newly formed team of Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno showed seasoned-chemistry as they won the Flight A doubles championship over LMU's Errol Smith/Luke Bohuslav, 8-4. It's the first top-flight victory for Soemarno, a freshman who joined the Ducks after a prolific junior doubles career.
Also competing in Flight A for doubles was Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens. After dropping their opening match on Friday, the duo has bounced back and won two straight including today's contest against Brett Bacharach/Adam Levie of UC Davis, 8-6.
In the Flight B doubles championship, Bartosz Sawicki/Cormac Clissold came up short, falling 8-6 to Alec Adamson/Tommy Lam of UC Davis.
In singles, Maasland was unable to overcome Cal's Billy Griffith in the Flight A singles championship match. On the consolation side of the bracket, Jayson Amos won 4-1, Ret. over Yale Goldberg while Simon Stevens fell in three sets to Nicolas Moreno de Alboran (UCSB), 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
In flight B, Ethan Young-Smith continued his momentum from yesterday's victory to defeat Ryan Shen of Cal, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. In flight C, Brent Chin won over LMU's Alex Bourgeois in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
FIRST TOURNAMENT TAKEAWAYS: After just three weeks of practice, head coach Nils Schyllander has to be pleased with where his team stands in doubles. The newly formed pairs of Jayson Amos/Armando Soemarno and Bartosz Sawicki/Cormac Clissold both showed that they can compete well together and they will continue to improve as they play more. Ranked duo of Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens struggled in their first match, but they bounced back in their next two and will look to continue their momentum next week at the ITA Regional.
