EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 25 Oregon volleyball team held leads late in each set but finished off only one, allowing No. 10 UCLA to capture a 25-22, 19-25, 28-26, 29-27 win at Matthew Knight Arena before 1,724 fans Friday.
How It Happened: The first set was an unfortunate sign of things to come, as Oregon (10-8, 4-5 Pac-12) raced out to an advantage and had an 18-12 edge before the Bruins (16-3, 7-2) rallied. UCLA tallied the final seven points of the set, four from top hitter Jordan Anderson, who finished with a match-high 25 kills.
The Ducks displayed more fortitude in the second set, taking an 18-13 lead and never allowing UCLA closer than five points the rest of the way. Martenne Bettendorf had the kill that clinched the set, on her way to 24 kills in perhaps her best performance of the season. Oregon also got a boost from Frankie Shebby, who had four kills in the set and 11 for the match; she helped spell Lindsey Vander Weide, who injured her ankle early in the second set and didn't return until late in the third.
Vander Weide's return occurred as the Ducks were trying to hold off another UCLA rally, as the Bruins scored five straight points after falling behind 18-11. A kill by Vander Weide gave Oregon a 24-22 lead, but UCLA scored four of the next five points to clinch the set.
The fourth and final set was all too familiar. Oregon rallied from a back-and-forth start of the set and led 22-15. UCLA scored six straight and nine of the next 10 points, and though Vander Weide had a kill and a block to put the Ducks back up 25-24, the Bruins again scored four of the final five points to win the set and the match.
Who Stood Out: Bettendorf's 24 kills were one off the career high she set earlier this season against Utah, and a welcome return to form for a player who has been battling consistency. Shebby hasn't been part of the regular rotation in conference play but was ready when called upon while Vander Weide was receiving mid-match treatment.
What It Means: The Ducks were hoping for an upset that would boost their postseason credentials, and remain in search of one entering the second half of Pac-12 play.
Quotable:
Jim Moore
UO coach
“We couldn't put the ball on the floor in crunch time. ... You've got to put the ball on the floor. You can't hope the other team loses. You have to win it.”
Lindsey Vander Weide
UO freshman
“We started to play a little timid, playing it safe. We stopped pounding the ball and started hitting into their block.”
Notable: With her 20 digs, Amanda Benson moved into fourth in UO history by passing Amy McNeal Barnes (1,346, 1993-95). ... Oregon also got double-digit digs from Bettendorf (14), Maggie Scott (13) and Vander Weide (11), the first time four players reached double digits in the same match this season. ... The Ducks wore pink jerseys in support of breast cancer research and celebrated Women In Flight night, named for the UO fundraising program to benefit women's teams. The jerseys were auctioned off and raised $1,810 for breast cancer research. ...
Up Next: The Ducks host top-ranked and undefeated Southern California on Sunday (1 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
