Wise Leads Ducks at Nike Collegiate Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by another strong round from sophomore Aaron Wise, the Oregon men's golf team sits tied for 10th after one day of play at the Nike Collegiate Invitational at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course.
How It Happened: The Ducks fired a 3-under 281 on Pumpkin Ridge's par-71, 6,834-yard Ghost Creek course on Sunday to finish the day tied for 10th with Texas. With a 15-under 269 in the first round, Wake Forest leads the pack heading into Monday's second round.
Aaron Wise tallied a 3-under 68 to sit tied for ninth after his first 18 holes. It was Wise's sixth below-par outing in only seven rounds this season. The Lake Elsinore, Calif., native's day was highlighted by a spectacular 99-foot made birdie putt on the par-3 fifth hole that would be the first of six birdies for the round.
Senior Zach Foushee sank a big birdie putt on the 18th hole to end his day with a 1-under 70. Foushee finished Sunday tied for 30th overall.
After a tough double bogey on the par-3 11th hole, Thomas Lim bounced back with birdies on the 12th and 14th to get back to even par and tie himself for 32nd overall at the conclusion of the first round of play.
Sulman Raza finished the day tied for 46th with a 1-over 72 while Brandon McIver sits in a tie for 65th after a 4-over first round.
What It Means: Although the Ducks' 3-under 280 was only one stroke off of the team's season low to par for 2015-16, low first-round scores from Wake Forest, USC and Stanford allowed the three teams to create some space between themselves and much of the rest of the field. The tournament gets a change of scenery tomorrow, however, with competition moving to Pumpkin Ridge's par-72, 7,015-yard Witch Hollow course for the remaining two rounds. With 36 holes left to play, Oregon will look to capitalize on the opportunities the course affords them these next two days to remain in the hunt and cut into the lead.
Monday's Schedule: Paired with Texas and Vanderbilt for Monday's second round, the Ducks will tee off at 8:20 a.m. on the par-3 10th hole.
