PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon women's tennis team's final day at the WSU Invitational was highlighted by freshman Shweta Sangwan winning the Gray flight singles championship.
How It Happened: After singles wins on both Friday and Saturday, Sangwan cruised through Sunday's championship match. The Duck freshman handled Idaho's Maria Tavares in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-4, to claim her first collegiate singles title.
Alyssa Tobita and Micheline Aubuchon could not find victories in their championship appearances. Tobita fell in a second-set 9-7 tiebreaker that decided the match in Washington State's Donika Bashota's favor. Aubuchon won the first set of her championship match, but would fall in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Sophomore Kennan Johnson won, 6-3, 6-2, in the Crimson flight consolation finals over Jelena Lazarevic. Freshman Christi Woodson also won her consolation match, 6-2, 6-1, against Portland's Tatiana Grigoryan while Daniela Nasser knocked off Saroop Dhatt of Portland, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Marlou Kluiving was triumphant in her final competition of the weekend as well, defeating Washington State's Barbora Michalkova, 6-3, 6-4, in an extra match.
The Ducks couldn't find the same rhythm they showed the previous two days in doubles, going 0-4 on the day.
Quotable – Head Coach Alison Silverio: “We had little victories throughout the whole tournament. There was growth in each situation we faced. I was proud of the way our upperclassmen led and how our new players responded. This weekend was about being fearless, consistent and disciplined through adversity. We believe in the process and will solidify the information we gained into our work this week.”
What It Means: Freshman Shweta Sangwan's win was a positive sign for the young Ducks, whose roster includes seven players that are sophomores or younger. That's not to mention performances from other newcomers like Woodson and Johnson, who were able to rebound from first round singles losses to go on to win their consolation titles.
Although the squad struggled in doubles today, Oregon looked strong in doubles play the first two days of competition, going a combined 14-4 on Friday and Saturday. Sangwan and Tobita were the top-performing doubles squad for the Ducks, teaming up to go 5-1 on the weekend.
Up Next: The Ducks now turn their attention to next weekend's University of Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash. The three-day tournament is set to open on Friday.
