Post-Game Quotes - Oregon vs. Savannah State
11/21/15 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman- Head Coach
On the offensive performance tonight…
“In the first half I thought our ball movement was pretty good, and because of that we were able to shoot 60 percent. In the second half our ball movement wasn't quite as good. We didn't share it quite as well. That brought our shooting percentage down to 43 percent. It was a little bit like our defensive effort. Pretty good in the first half, and then second half they shot over 50%.
On what caused some of tonight's struggles…
“It was a lack of focus. We missed a lot of free throws, weren't in the right spots and didn't play very well.
On Elgin's performance on the offensive glass…
“He made some plays. He got some rebounds and got some put-backs. We struggled there for a while but he and Chris made a couple of plays there and kept us going.”
On upcoming Valparaiso game…
“Valparaiso is as good as Baylor. Their power ranking will be every bit as good as Baylor's when it's all said and done. They are going to win 30 games, and they will be a good team. I just hope one of those 30 wins is not us.”
Dillon Brooks – Sophomore, Forward
On the win…
“It wasn't a very strong game. We had a really strong first half, but the second half we had some letdowns. Overall, we got some guys in, Roman (Sorkin) and Trevor (Manuel) got to show what they can do, and Kendall (Small) had a very good game.”
On if there was any hangover from the Baylor game…
“Yeah, you could say that. We had so much energy for Baylor, and we just tried to hold that energy over to Savannah State, but it's very challenging. “
On what Coach Altman wants them to improve on on offense…
“Just running the floor, executing plays more and feeding the post.”
On the upcoming matchup with Valparaiso…
“We know their personnel and we know that they're a really good team. They run their plays well, and they're an experienced team with a lot of older guys. We just have to come and get ready for a fight and for a real good game.”
Elgin Cook – Redshirt Senior, Forward
On the team's defense tonight…
“I think we played well defensively in spurts, but I think we can get a lot better. “
On his five offensive rebounds…
“The whole game coach was just telling us to go to the boards and I went and got a few tip-ins.”
On Kendall Small's play…
“I think Kendall played real well. He put pressure on the ball, and that's what we need. He ran the team; he did a good job.”
Horace Broadnax – Head Coach, Savannah State
On his thoughts about the game…
“It basically turned out how it was supposed to. Oregon is in the Pac-12 for a reason. I think our guys were kind of nervous. We only had about four guys last year that had ever played in a game like this. We got what we needed to get out of it. Obviously, I wish the first game could have been a lot better. The second half was a lot better. The guys came out, played and got into the flow of the game. We just couldn't rebound. We didn't put bodies on people, but they've got some fast guys, athletic guys, guys that are going to compete in the Pac-12…I told the kids before the game that if we won the game we have to get up and go to work and if we lose the game we have to get up and go to work. Dana (Altman) wants his team to look a whole lot different come February and March, and I want my team to look different come February and March. Obviously, I'm disappointed with the loss, but we're going to move on.”
On how tough it is to match up with Oregon…
“They're very aggressive on the offensive glass. We needed to put some bodies on them. They got some easy second chances. Initially, they were transitioning well offensively. (Chris Boucher) was running. They were running. They were getting good layups. We were thinking and they were going. We were able to combat it a little bit better in the second half…I coached against Dana (Altman) at Creighton, and he has a tendency to want his guys to be tough and not afraid to get their hands dirty.”
