Post-Game Quotes: Oregon vs. Valparaiso
11/23/15 | Men's Basketball
Dana Altman – Head Coach, Oregon
On turning the game around during the second half…
“Well, our biggest struggle that first half was those 10 turnovers we had that led to 13 easy points for them. Our defense was working pretty hard in the half court, but we'd turn it over and they'd go shoot a layup. We were trying to make tough plays, they're a good defensive team, they play that thing inside out, their hands are active and they're a physical team. So, we cut those turn overs down to three in the second half and they only got three points off of them.”
On the team's offense throughout the game…
“We've got a lot of things to iron out. We weren't very smooth, and our execution wasn't very good. Offensively, we've got a long way to go. We've got guys that have got to get a better feel for their cuts, their movements. We're not sharp with anything we do offensively. There's a lot of room for improvement offensively.”
On three-pointers…
“We've got to take better ones. A lot of the cases we're rushing them, just so excited about getting a three up.”
On what he's learned about the team after wins over Baylor and Valpo…
“No doubt they are two big wins for us, but as I told the guys, heck, we're at home we should win. I want them to take that mentality and find a way. Now, we've got to get better.”
Dillon Brooks – Sophomore, Forward
On coming out strong in the second half…
“We just had to get stops and get rebounds. We were out-rebounding them but we weren't executing and we weren't getting to the paint a lot. Overall, in the second half we just bulked up and we fought through it.”
On what needs to improve offensively…
“We need to work on our threes a little bit, but that will come because we shoot, like, 50 threes anyway. But overall, there's always a defensive emphasis.”
On what the team learned about themselves with three wins this week…
“Even when we're down, we can still get wins. Coach Altman is a very good coach and he's been through all situations in his career. Overall, we played Baylor who was a really big team and a really good team, and then we played Valpo who was a skilled, really methodical team, so we got both worlds. But overall I think if we grind out every game and we play hard on defense, we can go against anybody.”
On replacing Joseph Young's energy from last season…
“Joe was always fired up and everything, and at the beginning of the year we were kind of going slow through the motions and we weren't having great practices. Coach said you kind of have to act like Joe and get the spirits up and everything, even with the smaller games just to show that there's a monster coming around. Overall, I just try to pump up my players and get stops on defense.”
Tyler Dorsey – Freshman, Guard
On him and Brooks scoring over half the team's points…
“We knew it was going to be a battle and a hard game the whole game, but me and Dillon had it going so we were feeding off each other and our other teammates made great plays and they found us.”
“I just go with the feel of the game and my teammates find me in good spots and I knocked them down.”
On the offense being fueled by the defense…
“That's when the game changed, when we got stops. When we got stops we just ran in transition and got easy buckets.”
On his first week playing college basketball…
“It's been great. It's just been a great experience, and I'm enjoying it, but we've got a lot of tough games coming up and we've got to get ready for them.”
“I think I was ready for this and my teammates are helping me with the process, so it's going smoothly.”
Bryce Drew – Head Coach, Valparaiso
On the loss to Oregon…
“I thought it was a very competitive game. I thought that the 10-minute to four-minute stretch in the second half obviously was the difference in the game.”
On Oregon's Dillon Brooks…
“We knew how good he was coming in with the international experience that he has and how competitive he is. Obviously, we didn't want him to have as big a night as did, but he's an excellent player. What makes them a good team is that they have a lot of pieces that can have big nights.”
