Ducks in Third After First Round at The Gifford

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon men's golf team finished the first round of play at The Gifford tied for third overall on Monday at the par-71, 6,996-yard La Costa Legends Golf Course.
How It Happened: Paired with Wisconsin and South Florida, the Ducks carded a 3-over 287 Monday to tie host UCLA for third heading into Tuesday's second round. Stanford and Washington are tied for the lead after the tournament's first 18 holes, with each sitting at 1-over.
Junior Thomas Lim led the Ducks on Monday, turning in a 3-under 68 for his lowest single-round stroke total of the season. Lim dropped in six birdies on his way to tying Alvaro Ortiz of Arkansas for second overall on the player leaderboard at the conclusion of the first round of action.
Aaron Wise finished the day at 1-under and tied for seventh individually. Wise's first-round 70 was his ninth subpar round in 10 total rounds this season.
Although he struggled to find a groove in his first round, redshirt junior Sulman Raza converted two birdies and sank an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole to post a 2-over 73 and finish the day tied for 25th.
Senior Zach Foushee and freshman Edwin Yi each turned in 5-over 76's for their first rounds.
Competing as an individual, freshman Sam Foust also carded a 76 in his first round. After an up and down first round, Foust finished strong with birdies on his final two holes.
What It Means: Only two strokes back from the lead after day one, Oregon is still well within reach of first place after 18 holes of play. The Ducks remained at or near the top of the leaderboard for much of the day Monday, and will look to do the same in the second and third rounds.
Other Notes and Numbers: Oregon made most of its moves on par-5's on Monday, finishing the day in first place in par-5 scoring with a 7-under total … The 81 competitors at the La Costa Legends course combined to record an average score of 74.15 on Monday with nine subpar rounds, two of which came from Oregon's Thomas Lim and Aaron Wise.
Second Round Tee Time: The Ducks will be paired with Washington and Stanford for Tuesday's second round, and are set to tee off at 9:50 a.m.
