EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon volleyball team was swept at home for the second straight match Thursday night, falling to No. 7 Stanford 25-23, 25-17, 25-18 before 1,905 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: Oregon's recent struggle to close out sets was a factor again from the outset. The Ducks led 17-11 in the first set, forcing Stanford to take timeout. The Cardinal proceeded to score four straight points and 10 of the next 13 to creep ahead 21-20. A Lindsey Vander Weide kill forced the last tie at 23-23, but Stanford closed out the set with two straight points.
The second set was incredibly even, with the teams trading off points back and forth in the early going. Stanford finally grabbed momentum out of a 12-12 tie, opening up a lead at 17-13. The Ducks could never regain their stride, and the Cardinal scored the final four points to clinch the set.
Oregon established its block early in the third set, after having just one in the first two sets combined. The Ducks used three blocks to forge an early 6-3 lead in the final set, yet couldn't sustain that burst. Stanford broke a 9-9 tie with a run that put the Cardinal up 14-10, and Oregon never could close the gap.
Who Stood Out: Vander Weide led the Ducks in kills for the first time in six matches, finishing with 11 on .241 hitting. Taylor Agost added nine kills and Martenne Bettendorf finished with eight. Merete Lutz led three Stanford players in double-digits with her 14 kills, helping the Cardinal hit .361 for the match.
Quotable:
Jim Moore, UO coach
On Stanford's rally in the first set
“As they came back, you could see it on us, whatever's been getting to us. … It's what's been affecting us, and we didn't stay focused. One point turned into four.”
What It Means: Oregon lost for the fourth time in five matches, putting the Ducks in a hole that threatens their postseason aspirations. Five of the final seven matches are at home, and the Ducks need to take advantage.
Up Next: Oregon hosts California on Sunday (1:30 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
