Santoso and Ulep Lead Ducks in Round One
02/15/15 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon women's golf team got off to a solid start Saturday morning at the Peg Barnard Invitational when they fired a 8-over 292 to finish the day in 2nd place out 12 teams. Cathleen Santoso and Kelsey Ulep paced the Ducks with two 1-under rounds of 70.
How It Happened: Oregon started the day on holes 1-4 playing with players from California and Stanford in what ended up being a beautiful 70-degree day in Stanford, Calif.
Santoso was rock-solid all day with four birdies and just three bogeys. Her 70 today tied for her season-low round on the year. Ironically, the last time the sophomore recorded a 70 in a tournament was in the fall on Oct. 19 at the Stanford Intercollegiate in the final round.
Ulep got hot towards the end of her day and ended up pouring in birdies on three of her last four holes to provide the Ducks' other under-par score. The freshman's 1-under 70 is the best round of her young Oregon career.
Marcella Pranovia carded UO's third-best score of the day with a 4-over 75. The Bali, Indonesia, native was just 2-over going into her last hole (No. 1), but was tripped up by the par-5 and ended up taking a double bogey on the hole.
After bogeying her first four holes, Caroline Inglis dug in and managed to finish with a 6-over 77. Inglis sprinkled in three birdies over the course of her round and ended up shooting a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
Cali Hipp finished up with a 7-over 77, and Cassy Isagawa recorded her lowest round of the year playing as an individual with a 2-under 69. The senior had three birdies and just one bogey on the day.
What It Means: The Ducks only trail UC Davis (1-under, 283) in the team standings. Oregon is nine shots back of the leaders, and San Jose State (293), Stanford (293) and California (295) are all within striking distance.
Top Individuals: Including Isagawa's 2-under 69 as an individual, the Ducks have three players in the top five of the individual standings. Isagawa (T-2nd), Santoso (T-5th) and Ulep (T-5th) all are in positions to potentially claim the individual title after tomorrow's round.
Tweeters: UO led the field with 15 birdies on the day. Ulep tied for the individual lead with five, Santoso was close behind with four and Inglis had three of her own.
Quotable: Head Coach Ria Scott
“Lots of bright moments out there for the Ducks. Our players are hitting their irons really well right now. Just looking to have more putts drop tomorrow.”
“We have lots of experience on this golf course and we are looking forward to getting after it tomorrow.”
Freshman Kelsey Ulep
“After a rough start, I kept persevering until the last putt.” (Birdied three of her last four holes)
Next Up: Oregon will prepare to play one more round tomorrow morning with another shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring for tomorrow's play can be found here. The Ducks will be playing with UC Davis and San Jose State on holes 1-4.
