Ducks Win Peg Barnard Invitational
02/16/15 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 36 Ducks came back from a nine-stroke deficit and won the Peg Barnard Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Stanford Golf Course thanks to an even-par 284. Kelsey Ulep shot another 1-under 70 to lead the Ducks with a third-place finish in the individual standings (2-under 140).
How It Happened: Oregon wasted no time in mounting a comeback against UC Davis, who fired a 1-under 283 in the opening round. Ulep and Cathleen Santoso began with birdies on their opening holes, and the Ducks combined for 10 birdies on the front nine – five of which came from Ulep.
Ulep, a freshman from Rocklin, Calif., was just one of two players in the field to finish both rounds under par. She fired a 4-under 31 on the front nine and ended the tournament with the most birdies of any competitor (10).
Caroline Inglis recovered from a rocky start on the front – two double bogeys on No. 6 and 7 – and came back with a flawless 3-under 33 on the back nine to finish with an even-par 71. She shaved six strokes off her score from yesterday to finish tied for 16th with a 148 (77-71).
Cali Hipp had the steadiest round of any Duck. Besides a birdie on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 9, the senior from Caldwell, Idaho, poured in 16 pars on her way to an even-par 71, good for her lowest round of the year.
Santoso provided the other counting score for the Ducks with a 1-over 72. She finished tied for sixth with an even-par 142 (70-72).
Marcella Pranovia's 2-over 73 did not count in Oregon's team score today, but she finished tied for 16th with a 148 (75-73).
Playing as an individual, Cassy Isagawa followed up her 2-under 69 from yesterday with a 1-over 72. She tied for fourth with a 141.
Paige Lee from UC Davis won the individual title with a 5-under 137 (66-71).
What It Means: Oregon's 284 is the eighth-lowest round in school history and their lowest round of the season. The Ducks' victory marks their first tournament title since last year when they won the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational.
It is also UO's first Peg Barnard Invitational title; their best previous finish was third place on two occasions (1997 and 2010).
Movin' On Up: With Oregon finishing ahead of No. 3 Stanford, No. 30 UC Davis, No. 34 California and No. 35 Colorado, UO should expect to see a significant jump in next week's Golfstat.com team rankings.
Scoring Well: The Ducks capitalized on their opportunities all weekend and ended up leading the field with 30 total birdies. Oregon also led the field in par 3 average (3.00), wrapping up the tournament even-par.
Quotable: Head Coach Ria Scott
“We are so proud of their gutsy, focused play. Coach Puga and I have known from the start that we have a great team. Hopefully the work they have done lately in addition to this win helps them believe it a little more.”
Next Up: The Ducks will be back in action next weekend at the Westbrook Invitational at the Westbrook Golf Village in Peoria, Ariz. Play will last from Sunday, Feb. 22 to Monday, Feb. 23.
