Santoso Propels Ducks at Westbrook Invitational
02/23/15 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. – Behind two under-par rounds from Cathleen Santoso (71-69), the Ducks logged a 2-under 286 in the first round and a 1-under 287 in the second to put themselves alone in second place at the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Ariz. Oregon (573) trails Tennessee (568) by just five strokes going into the final round tomorrow morning.
How It Happened: No. 35 Oregon came out of the gates strong in round one and four out of the five Ducks shot even-par or better in the first nine. Santoso shot a 4-under 32 with five birdies, Caroline Inglis fired a 2-under 34 and both Cassy Isagawa and Kelsey Ulep recorded even-par 36's.
At the end of the first round it was Santoso (1-under, 71) and Inglis (1-under 71) who led the way for UO and guided the Ducks into a tie for second place with the College of Charleston at 286. Ulep and Isagawa both shot even-par 70's to complete the round for Oregon.
The highlight of the first round, however, came from Marcella Pranovia when she eagled the par-5 eighth hole with a three. She was just one of three players to record an eagle on the day.
In the second round, the Ducks excelled on the back nine and held their second-place position in the overall team standings. Similar to the front nine in the first round, Oregon had four players shoot even-par or better on the back side.
Santoso put together another 4-under 32, Isagawa enjoyed a 2-under 34, Pranovia fired a 1-under 35 and Ulep recorded an even-par 36. With a little bit of cloud cover and temperatures in the mid-60's, Santoso carded her best 18 of the year with a 3-under 69.
Ulep was steady as usual and finished with an even-par 72, and Isagawa, Inglis and Pranovia all shot 1-over 73's in their second rounds.
Individually, Santoso is currently tied for first place and both Ulep (72-72, 144) and Inglis (71-73, 144) are tied for 13th heading into the final round tomorrow morning.
More Birdies: The Ducks are leading the field in birdies with 36 after two rounds of play. Santoso leads all players with 12 and Ulep wasn't far behind with eight of her own.
Santoso Right at Home: The sophomore's high-level of play should come as no surprise. She posted a 9-under 63 last season – the lowest round in school history – at the Westbrook Village Golf Club on her way to a tie for second place (70-63-74). The Sydney, Australia, native has shown that she can go even lower than she did today.
Quotable: Head coach Ria Scott
“We know we are within reach for tomorrow. What's most exciting about our position is that we still have our best golf ahead of us. Tomorrow we need to adjust quickly to the firmness of the greens and get off to a good start.”
Tomorrow: The Ducks will play with individuals from the tournament leader, Tennessee, and the third-place team, Illinois, on likely the same holes they started on today. Round three will begin at 8:30 a.m. (MT) with a shotgun start.
