Takeda's Homer Silences Lady Bears
02/20/15 | Softball
WACO, Texas – Senior Janie Takeda broke the 1-1 stalemate in the top of the seventh when she went yard over the left field wall to give the No. 2-ranked Oregon Ducks the 4-1 win over No. 7 Baylor on Thursday at Getterman Stadium in the opening game of the Baylor Invitational.
How It Happened: Hailey Decker gave Oregon the first run of the game when she launched a 1-1 pitch straight into the centerfield wall support pillars to give UO the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Bears plated the equalizer the very next half inning, scoring Lindsey Cargill after she roped a triple down the first-base line.
A walk to the very next batter ended the night for Karissa Hovinga as Geri Ann Glasco came in to relieve the junior and ended the BU threat.
The Lady Bears threated once again with a lead-off single in the bottom of the sixth after a close call at first. Katilyn Thumann advanced Cargill to second on a sac-bunt that was fielded perfectly by Decker. However, Cheridan Hawkins, who came in to pitch in the top of the sixth, got a strikeout and fly out to center to end the inning and send the game into the top of the seventh with the game tied 1-1.
Danica Mercado led things off for the Ducks with a double just short of going over the left field wall and was followed by bunt from Nikki Udria that was oddly played by the BU pitcher. That would then set up Janie Takeda's three-run jack that sailed over the left fielder's head to give the Ducks a 4-1 lead.
Hawkins shut the door on the Lady Bears in the bottom of the seventh as the Ducks notched their 11th-straight win of the season and handed Baylor its first loss of the season and snapped its nine-game winning streak.
By The Numbers: The Ducks touched up the BU pitchers, tallying 11 hits on the night, but none more important than the ones in the seventh…Oregon is now 2-5 all-time against Baylor…Hawkins improves to 5-0 on the year…Hawkins only needed 22 pitches in two innings of work as she mowed down a pair of Lady Bears.
Up Next: The Ducks will return to Getterman Stadium at 9:45 a.m. (PT) for the first of its double header on Friday, starting with Abilene Christian before taking on No. 25 Tulsa at noon.
