Oregon Wipes Out Nebraska 7-0
02/21/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 45 Ducks shook off a two-match skid by throttling No. 66 Nebraska 7-0 Friday night at the Student Tennis Center. The win puts Oregon at 7-3 and drops Nebraska to 2-4 on the season.
How It Happened: Oregon was on a mission the whole match, and the doubles point paved the way for a match that turned into a landslide. The No. 1 team of Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos came out strong in doubles and crushed Nebraska's Scott Elsass and Bradford Zitsch 6-1.
Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland wrapped up the opening point with a 6-3 win on court two over the Cornhuskers' Dusty Boyer and Linus Erhart. Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold were leading 5-4 in their match at the No. 3 position when play was stopped.
Stevens still managed to contribute to the Ducks' win when he notched an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 win over Chris Hogbarski on court five. Fellow freshman Clissold joined in on the fun and found the win column with a 6-1, 6-2 over Nebraska's Vasileios Stavropoulos, giving the Ducks a commanding 3-0 lead.
Farin sealed the victory for the Ducks with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court four against Marc Hermann.
The two teams played the rest of the matches out, and Oregon piled up three more wins in the process.
Amos picked apart Nebraska's Andrew Dzulynsky 7-5, 6-4 on court four, and Daan Maasland gritted out a tough second set and came away with a 6-0, 7-6 (9-7) win at the No. 1 position against Boyer.
Daniel Sardu was the last to finish on court three, and the senior managed to earn a three-set victory over Erhart, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-8 to give the Ducks a clean 7-0 sweep.
Significance: The Ducks needed a win badly, and they left no doubt with their fourth 7-0 win of the year. Oregon added on to their perfect record at the Student Tennis Center (6-0). They have outscored their opponents 40-2 in their six home matches.
Sardu-ing It: The Sopron, Hungary, native continues to carve out his place in Oregon men's tennis history. With his win today, the senior is in sole possession of third place in UO history for career singles wins (70).
Quotable: Head coach Nils Schyllander
“We showed up with a lot of energy from the get-go. We played good from top to bottom, singles and doubles. It was a pretty complete team effort.”
Senior Daniel Sardu on his accomplishment…
“It feels good, but it's always team first. I didn't know actually that I had 70 wins, but that makes me proud obviously. But it's good that we beat a pretty good team 7-0, that's first.”
Next Up: The Ducks will take one day off and then will play No. 65 Santa Clara on Sunday at 11 a.m. back at the Student Tennis Center.
