UO Takes Second at the Westbrook Invitational
02/24/15 | Women's Golf
PEORIA, Ariz. – The Oregon women's golf team shot the lowest round of the day (7-under, 281), but No. 14 Tennessee did just enough to hold on for the win at the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., giving UO second place. The Ducks (-10) and Volunteers (-13) were the only two teams to finish under par for the tournament at the Westbrook Village Golf Club. The 10-under 854 (286-287-281) is the program's third-lowest tournament total in school history.
The runner-up finish marks the second weekend in a row that the Ducks recorded a top-two finish. Cathleen Santoso earned second place as an individual with a three-day total of 211 (71-69-71), putting her at 5-under on the tournament.
How It Happened: The Ducks entered the day five strokes back of Tennessee, but UO was able to sprint out to a hot start and overtake the lead from the Volunteers. Oregon started on holes 1-4 and navigated the front nine with the same expertise that they did in round one.
Kelsey Ulep and Marcella Pranovia both fired 3-under 33's, and Santoso and Caroline Inglis both carded 2-under 34's to give the Ducks a four-shot lead over the Volunteers heading into the back nine.
Tennessee stormed back and made enough birdies to reclaim the lead from the Ducks down the stretch, but at the end of the day all four of the Ducks' counting scores were under par.
Santoso closed with a 1-under 71, giving the sophomore a three-round total of 211 (71-69-71), her lowest 54-hole total on the year.
Ulep continued her stellar play from last weekend and closed with a team-low 3-under 69 to wrap up the weekend tying for third with a 3-under 213 (72-72-69).
Inglis recorded a top-10 individual finish of her own after firing a 2-under 70 today for a total of a 2-under 214 (71-73-70).
Pranovia improved every round (76-73-71) for a 220, giving her a tie for 28th place. Cassy Isagawa closed with a 6-over 77 and tied for 46th (72-73-77, 222).
What It Means: Even though UO wasn't able to get past Tennessee, the Ducks are playing their best golf of the year. Today's 281 ties for the second-lowest round in school history.
Tops In Tweeters: For the second tournament in a row the Ducks led the field in birdies (50). Santoso led all players with 15 and Ulep tied for second with 12 of her own.
Oregon also played the par-3's better than any other team, finishing the weekend at even par.
Déjà Vu: Last year the Ducks placed second at the Westbrook Invitational with the lowest 54-hole score in school history, a 16-under 848. Oregon did well to replicate that finish this year with tougher, windier conditions throughout the weekend.
Quotable: Head Coach Ria Scott
“We would have loved to come away with a win today, but our team played well. It's not often we count four under-par scores, or we have three team rounds under par. Our team is starting to realize they can compete with anybody.”
