Ducks Sit In Seventh After Round One at the Anuenue
03/24/15 | Women's Golf
KAPALUA, Hawai'i – The Oregon women's golf team got off to a strong start in the first round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at the Bay Course in Kapalua, Hawai'i, but the Ducks faded down the stretch and finished the day in seventh place with a 13-over 301. UO will have two more rounds – 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday – to make up ground on the six teams ahead of them.
How It Happened: Starting on holes 8-11, the Ducks came out of the gates fast and finished 2-over on the back nine as a team.
Marcella Pranovia fired a 1-under 36, Cathleen Santoso and Caroline Inglis each fired even-par 37's, Cassy Isagawa carded a 1-over 38 and Kelsey Ulep finished with a 2-over 39.
In total, Oregon notched eight birdies on the back nine, three of which came from Inglis' even-par nine. Midway through the first round, the Ducks were floating around first and second place with the current tournament leaders, Texas (288).
Unfortunately, the Ducks were undone by the front nine and the Green and Yellow finished the front side 17-over as a team.
Santoso fared the best of any Oregon player and finished with a 2-over 37 on the front nine, giving her a 2-over 74 to lead the way for the Ducks in round one (tied for 13th).
Inglis was close behind her with a 3-over 38 on the front to close out the day with a 3-over 75, putting her in a tie for 16th.
Isagawa and Pranovia provided the other two counting scores for the Ducks with both shooting 4-over 76's.
Ulep's 6-over 78 did not count towards Oregon's team score on the day, and Cali Hipp recorded an 8-over 80 playing as an individual.
Ton of Golf To Play: Despite their highest round of the spring season, the Ducks are still in contention for the team title. After Texas (E), Louisville (+2) and UC Davis (+2), the rest of the field is at least 7-over. It only took UO one round to come back from nine strokes down at the Peg Barnard Invitational a month ago, so the Ducks know what it takes to come back from a sizeable deficit.
Round Rundown: Oregon was third in the field in par-5 average at 4-under (4.84), but they were 10th in par-3 average at 15-over (3.60). Seven of the team's nine birdies came on par-5's, and three of the team's five double bogeys came on par-3's.
Tomorrow: In the second round, the Ducks will tee off on holes 5-8 tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. (HT) with players from Southern Methodist, San Jose State and Oregon State.
