UO's Comeback Bid Falls Short
02/07/15 | Men's Tennis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 44 Ducks fought, but No. 49 Indiana did just enough at key junctures in the match to win 4-2 at home at the IU Tennis Center. Oregon falls to 6-2 on the year and the Hoosiers improve to 6-1.
How It Happened: The Hoosiers got off to the start they needed when their No. 1 doubles team of Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk beat Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos on court one 6-4. The Ducks' Cormac Clissold and Simon Stevens were ahead 5-4 on court three, but Indiana's No. 2 doubles team of Stefan Lugonjic and Chris Essick defeated Daniel Sardu and Daan Maasland 6-2 to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
Indiana began singles by picking up two wins and they quickly drew within one point of winning the match. Farin battled against Monette, – an All-Big Ten player last season – but the junior lost 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 1 singles to the Hoosiers' top player.
Amos fell victim to another tiebreak when he dropped his match 6-1, 7-6 (4) to IU's Raheel Manji on court three. Indiana led 3-0, but the Ducks would make a mid-match charge.
Clissold picked up a big win at the No. 6 position to keep the Ducks in the match when he came back to beat Sven Lalic 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2.
His fellow freshman, Stevens, found a way to win his match in three sets as well when he took care of Stefan Lugonjic 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0 to draw the Ducks within one point at 3-2.
Maasland and Sardu were both in tiebreaks on courts two and four, respectively, but Maasland couldn't hold on as he fell in his match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to Daniel Bednarczyk, giving the Hoosiers the 4-2 win.
Tiebreakers
All six singles matches saw at least one tiebreaker set. Out of the six tiebreaker sets that occurred, only one went the Ducks way – Sardu's 7-6 (4) first-set win. Indiana's victory was in large part thanks to the Hoosiers success in the tiebreakers.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
“The guys battled back from 3-0 down and got all the way to a third-set tiebreaker for the match. Unfortunately we came up just short, it was an extremely hostile environment and that played a part for sure. This will make the guys in the long run.”
“It was great to see both our freshmen come back and win convincingly in three sets.”
Next Up: The Ducks will travel two hours south to Louisville, Ky., to play Louisville on Sunday at 7 a.m. (PT).
